IPL Group Stage Matches May 9th-10th

The last week of group matches and five teams are still in contention for a top 4 place in the knockout stages beginning next week

All prices here are Ladbrokes

Kings XI Punjab v KKR (Tuesday 9th May)
Kings XI’s longshot hopes of making the last four were dented on Sunday when they lost to Gujarat. They compiled 189/3 thanks to Amla’s second century in succession but Gujarat chased down the total for the loss of only four wickets in a high-scoring contest.

KXIP are now three points behind Sunrisers, who are 4th, and KXIP have three games to play and will certainly need to win 2 of the 3 and probably win out to stand a chance of post-season play.

KKR are second, assured of a spot in the knockout phases and have two games to play with Mumbai to follow after this game. They beat RCB on Sunday with real fireworks from their batting order. Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn put on a record Powerplay score in T20s, Narine equaled the fastest fifty ever in the IPL and for KKR the battle is for a top 2 spot at the end of the group stages to get into the play-off eliminator, where the winner goes straight through to the final.

Prices here are KXIP 21/20 and KKR 10/11. As above both sides are highly motivated to win this game but to my mind, the return of Cris Lynn to the top of the KKR batting order gives them such firepower that they have to be worthy favourites and I will be supporting them.

Gujarat Lions v Delhi Daredevils (Wednesday 10th May)
Deli suffered the largest ever IPL defeat on Saturday responding to Mumbai’s score of 220 with 66 all out. They now have 4 wins from their 11 games, an inexperienced batting order did well initially but has really struggled down the stretch.

Gujarat scored 192 to beat KXIP last game in a game that followed a familiar pattern. Gujarat’s weak bowling line up conceded a big score, Gujarat’s high powered batting chased it down. Out of the competition’s post-season with only 4 wins in 12 games, their form has come too little too late.

That said to see this game evens each of two with Gujarat at home against the dispirited Daredevils is a surprise and they should be supported here.
