Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says the poor weather forecast in Bristol makes a top-bat bet even better.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka
10:30 AM - Friday 7th, June 2019

Pakistan versus Sri Lanka is not going to be the most glamorous of matches at this summer’s World Cup. Not least because the weather forecast for Bristol on Friday is grim to say the least.

Rain is forecast, with a chance of 100 per cent, from six the morning until six in the evening. Prospects of play, of any sort, don’t look great. There will be plenty who will be looking to leverage that on completed match markets but any sort of value will be in the same sort of supply as sunshine.

Still, a reduced overs contest has a smidge of a chance. And we should certainly not be treating this as a 50-over game. A 20-over contest looks more likely. Maybe even shorter. Unfortunately that does not help Sri Lanka, chronic outsiders, much. Pakistan are a much better T20 team than they are 50-over. Indeed, the ICC rate Pakistan as the No 1 team in the world in the shortest format but sixth in 50 overs.

Pakistan have been well backed for victory after their superb victory over England in their second game, putting behind them an atrocious performance against West Indies. They are no better than 2/5 with Bet365 and Sri Lanka are 9/4 with Betfred and Coral. Given Pakistan’s taste for swerving from the sublime to the ridiculous we can’t advise playing at such short odds.

If there is a reduction in overs it stands to reason that opening batsman will shorten up in the betting. In normal circumstances, openers hold sway on the top runscorer markets because they have the opportunity to bat for longest and can make use of the powerplay overs.

Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq has been a consistent favourite of ours all summer and we see no reason why not to bet him to get us a winner here. At 7/2 with Betfair, Coral and Ladbrokes he is priced as if this is a 50-over match.

Even better, we know that price is wrong. In the last two years Imam has won this market 41 per cent of the time. There is no batter in the world who has a better hit rate. He should be the jolly no question.

Best tips for the match

Imam top Pakistan runscorer 7/2 Betfair, Coral and Ladbrokes
