Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says Australia are way too short given the ingredients for chaos in Taunton on Wednesday.

Australia v Pakistan

10:30 AM - Wednesday 12th, June 2019

Before we even begin to crack the code for this mouthwatering spectacle, we need to check the weather forecast. This World Cup is in danger of being washed away given the downpours and with three games abandoned without a result, the organisers are coming under fire for not including reserve days in the schedule.

The good news is that no rain is forecast until 17.00. Until that point, though, dark and grey clouds are set to hang over Taunton threatening to burst and cause more disruption. From 11.00 the percentage chance of rain is no higher than 21 per cent. The bad news is that from 18.00 and 19.00 the percentage rises to 51 and 70 respectively. That could mean we revert to the Duckworth-Lewis calculation for a winner.

There will be a temptation, therefore, to consider betting the chaser. They will have a smaller target to go after in all probability bit fewer overs to get it. Whereas the team batting first gets a full 50, the chaser might be playing Twenty20 cricket. It might be easier to score at 8.5 an over for 20 than 6.5 for 50.

Runscoring, you see, should be easy. Taunton is an absolute road even if the weather has not been the best. The short boundaries mean you get ridiculous value for your shots as a batter and we could see something monstrous up front. But bear in mind 350 on this track is probably more like 310 on a normal international ground.

With so much up in the air, literally, it is hard to reckon Australia are the call at unimpressive odds. They are no better than 4/9 with Bet365, Betfair, Betfred, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes. Considering they reverted to type with ponderous batting and stodgy strategy against India, there will not be a rush to get with them.

Pakistan, then, are worth a risk at 9/5 (2.80) with Betfair. Look, we know they are capable of something chaotic. But we also have big respect for their front three in the batting and solid all-rounders in Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim. Hell, even Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amit might continue their decent vein of form, even if the formbook suggests otherwise.

They should be competitive, that’s the point. And if they win here they save their series. A defeat is likely to end their semi hopes because of the washout against Sri Lanka robbed them of easy points.

Best Tips for the Match

Pakistan 9/5 @ Betfair
