Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says the England pacer could repeat the form he showed against the Afghans in a warm-up

England v Afghanistan

Tuesday 18th June at Old Trafford, Manchester

England are cruising to the semi-finals and although we have been down about their prospects of glory at prohibitive odds, it is hard not to see them contesting the final. They are, effectively, just one win from the showpiece considering the lack of competition in the group stage.

Afghanistan are unlikely to cause them any problems. They certainly didn’t in a warm-up. At the end of last month England hammered them by nine wickets at The Oval. They bowled them out for just 160 with Jofra Archer and Joe Root sharing three wickets each.

It is tempting to reckon that Archer will blow them away again. The rationale is pretty simple: associate nations coming up to the big stage can often struggle against that extra bit of zip. After all, there are few who can match Archer’s pace. Jofra Archer is 11/4 (3.75) It is hardly a mug bet. By the same token, Mark Wood cannot be discounted. If he is fit. Wood has had an ankle problem and although England would be foolish to rick him in a match which they could probably win with half a team, it would be remiss not to point out his price of 4/1 (5.0) with Betfair.

For top England batsman there is nothing wrong in siding with the openers in the belief that if the hosts bat first, they will take advantage of the powerplay and opportunity to bat for longest. And if they bat second the target is likely to be small so a 50 or 60 could win it.

Jonny Bairstow, who has been a major disappointment by the way, is 3s (4.0) with Bet365 and they could see some business. The same firm go 5/1 (6.0) about James Vince. That is a rick because we expect Vince to open the batting in the absence of Jason Roy, who has a hamstring injury. Again, why risk a key player in such a mismatch?

Vince, clearly, is a stonking price and we urge you to get that price before they realise the error of their ways. Won’t be long, though, because pretty much everywhere else Vince is rated at 3s.

Best Tips for the Match: Archer top England bowler 11/4 Betfair
