Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says the West Indies batter is worth a follow against India

India should be capable of ending them, however, although there are few Windies players who still believe.

Their defeat last time out against New Zealand was of the variety that crushes the soul and competitive spirit. They had the game in their pocket twice in the chase. The final time, with Carlos Brathwaite blitzing it to all parts with just five needed, is going to be hard to come to terms with.

It does not help that Andre Russell, their talismanic all-rounder, is not fit. He personifies the West Indies campaign. In their opener Russell and West Indies were firing and fearsome, destroying Pakistan. From then on they have been revealed to be one-dimensional, suffering from a lack of strategy and fitness. Russell’s knees have eventually given way, unable to bowl his full quota of overs. He was a gamble. Just like West Indies.

All we can do here is Hope. Shai Hope that is. The West Indies batsman is worth following for top runscorer honours. On our two-year data study we know that he top scores 33.3 per cent of the time. That’s a 2/1 shot. So the 10/3 (4.33) that we can get from Betfair and Paddy Power is value.

Hope has terrific form against India. In October last year he took 123 not out and 95 off them in consecutive matches in Vizag and Pune. They were form-busting innings. The 123 enabled West Indies to tie in a chase of 321 and the latter was enough to give his team the win. As usual, we have to point out that Virat Kohli, as talented as he is, is the wrong favourite for top India batsman. Kohli wins this market 28 per cent of the time in the last two years. Rohit Sharma is far more consistent at 37 per cent.

It would be folly, then, not to bet Rohit when Ladbrokes give him a 27 per cent chance. The 11/4 (3.75) is value with Kohli taking up a big chunk. Betfair go 13/5, which equates to 27 per cent. There’s not much in it but we have to go with our edge.

Best Tips for the Match

Back Rohit Sharma top India runscorer 11/4 Ladbrokes

Back Shai Hope top West Indies runscorer 10/3 Betfair, Paddy Power
