They should have been done and dusted but find themselves in with an unlikely semi-final chance after their stunning upset against England at Headingley.

It has been some turnaround. With weeks to go before the deadline for naming their squad, Sri Lanka held a trial tournament at home to help make up their minds. They then left a host of their best players at home and changed the captain. Such upheaval aligned with desultory form over the last two years suggested they were on a hiding to nothing.

Perhaps Sri Lanka’s success over England says more about the latter than the former. A host nation crumbling under the expectation. Indeed, without that win Sri Lanka would have been still considered to be stragglers. They were humiliated by New Zealand, for example. Their points tally has been swelled by two no results because of rain so it is arguable that their true standing is more in line with their opponents on Friday, South Africa.

The Saffers have been a huge disappointment, although there are mitigating circumstances. They came into the tournament with a revered bowling line-up but lost Dale Steyn for the whole shebang and Lungi Ngidi for key games. That put tremendous pressure on a batting line-up which was solid rather than the spectacular that is required to go deep. They retreated into their shell, playing a brand of ODI which would have been useful 30 years ago.

Considering the state of the two teams, it is a surprise to see South Africa so skinny. We are happy to take a gamble on Sri Lanka then at odds as big as 13/8 (2.63) with Bet365, Betfred, Coral and Ladbrokes.

For tops wagers, we keep faith with Quinton de Kock at inflated 3/1 (4.0) (Bet365, Betfred, William Hill). The 7/2 (4.5) that Betfred offer about Ngidi, now getting back to full fitness, is also terrific value in terms of how often he wins this market. Both men should be considerably shorter.

Best Tips for the Match

Back Quinton de Kock top South Africa batsman 3/1 Bet365, Betfred, William Hill

Back Lungi Ngidi top South Africa bowler 7/2 Betfred

Back Sri Lanka 13/8 Bet365, Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes.
