Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says the odds aren’t what he hoped for but Rashid Khan and co can get their campaign up and running.

Afghanistan v Sri Lanka

10:30 AM - Tuesday 4th, June 2019

At first glance this doesn’t sound like the sort of World Cup match which would have many folks salivating. Afghanistan are still relative ingenues and Sri Lanka, former champions and finalists in 2011, have a proud tradition. Mismatch alert? Not a bit of it. It could be an absolute corker with two evenly-matched teams set to go head-to-head at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Before a ball was bowled in the tournament we identified Sri Lanka as the basket case of the World Cup. They left some of the best batsmen and bowlers at home and, bizarrely, seem to have treated the tournament as some sort of experiment to see which young players have what it takes.

That approach – as well as the refusal to pick Dinesh Chandimal, a vastly experienced runmaker who would have been ideal for English conditions – meant we have been shouting about betting Sri Lanka to finish bottom of the group section. Key to that wager coming off at prices as big as 4/1 but soon cut to 13/8 is this very game. Afghanistan are going to have to cause a ‘shock’.

Anyone who saw Sri Lanka’s pathetic effort against New Zealand in their opener will reckon the Afghans have what it takes. Their inexperienced batsmen struggled to make the step up and the Kiwis then roasted the bowling attack to notch a ten-wicket thrashing.

The bookmakers have taken heed to the tune of struggling to split the pair. And we have to say we’re quite surprised by that. Sri Lanka are favourites – but not by much. Betfair go 5/6 (1.83) the Lankans with Afghanistan no better than even money (2.0) with Bet365, Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes and William Hill.

With that 4/1 Sri Lanka to get the wooden spoon still rattling in our head we thought we’d get chunkier odds. After all, this game should decide it. But we’ll keep faith with the Afghans, although it is not the big bet we hoped for.

In Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi they have three match winners. We can only see two for the Lankans in Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga.

Best tips for the match:

Afghanistan even money (Bet365, Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes and William Hill)
