Royal Challengers Bangalore v Delhi Capitals, Chinnaswamy International Stadium

Sunday 7 April, 11.30

With just a day of rest following their chastening, humiliating defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders and the extraordinary Andre Russell, Royal Challengers Bangalore are in action. Perhaps it’s a good thing they get an immediate chance to put it right. Perhaps it’s a good thing that they face a Delhi Capitals side who have been almost as chaotic.

The match odds market is probably one to leave alone. Bangalore or Delhi probably have no clue what disaster will befall them next so how the hell should we know. There is also an increasing feeling of uncertainty among punters that this is an IPL where stats, hard-nosed analysis and basic form understanding counts for nowt.

Instead we’re looking for big numbers on the top bowler and top bat markets. And the Bangalore market for the former certainly catches the eye. Pawan Negi looks a nice price at 9/2 (5.5) with Bet365 and Ladbrokes to take most wickets for his team.

Negi was sensational against KKR on Friday, almost single-handedly keeping the flow of runs at bay and taking wickets into the bargain. Negi has been on our radar for a while and he should have been in the XI as soon as RCB lost their opener against Chennai. But it says something about the RCB brains’ trust that he only appeared five games in.

Versus KKR Negi took two for 21 (to share honours) with an economy rate of 6.6. Impressive considering KKR’s winning rate was 10.7. Negi, of course, didn’t get to bowl his full quota of overs. RCB took him off when he had the game by the scruff of his neck. By the time he came back it was over. It’s that sort of decision-making which leaves rational observers baffled.

Importantly, he was going to be tasked with a death over and if that is repeated in this game, Negi could be in for cheap wickets.

Best tips for the match

Pawan Negi top RCB bowler 9/2 Bet365, Ladbrokes

Rajasthan Royals v Kolkata Knight Riders, Sawai Masingh Stadium

Sunday 7 April, 15.30

Is there any point writing about anyone else other than Andre Russell? Probably not. Dre Russ, as he is known, stunned the world with ferocious hitting against RCB on Friday night. It was power the like of which we have not seen and it is not an exaggeration to say that it was an innings which dawned a new era.

No longer will teams be considered down and out when they need 15 or 16 an over at the death. Russell’s 13-ball 48 has us all thinking again. In our preview for that game we said that Russell could be considered value at big numbers for top bat because he needed half the time at the crease as others. Well, after he seems to need only a third of the time.

Russell is 5/1 (6.0) with Bet365, Betfair, Paddy Power and William Hill for top KKR bat against Rajasthan and 7/1 (8.0) for man of the match with Betfair. The same form go 45/1 (46.0) that he is the overall top match batsman. This surely a mistake on their behalf but the real price of around 15/2 might be worth an interest.
