Mumbai Indians v Rajasthan Royals, Wankhede Stadium

Saturday 13 April, 11.30

Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals clash here. Is clash the right word? Probably not when one team is likely to meekly surrender. And that will be the Royals, who lost their fifth game out of six in horrific circumstances against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday.

After battling hard to post a competitive 151, the Royals immediately took charge of the chase by reducing the Super Kings, who have been by far the best team in the tournament so far, to 24 for four. They remained pretty much on top and when it came to the final over with 18 still required, the Royals were as short as 1/5 (1.20) in-running.

But a truly appalling last six balls (or what should have been six balls) from supposed England talisman, Ben Stokes, handed Chennai victory. Stokes, who had capitulated in the final over of the World T20 defending 19 against West Indies, went six-two(no-ball)-two-wicket-two-two-wide-six. This is code for cricketing incompetence.

Before that game we wrote on these pages that the Royals would be smart to leave out Stokes, considering he will soon be leaving for England duty and his performances have been terrible. Maybe they might do it now with stellar Aussie hitter Ashton Turner waiting in the wings.

Not surprisingly, Mumbai, who have won three in a row and four of their last five, are short favourites here. Still, it is arguable that the 4/6 (1.67) that Betfair offer is not short enough. Certainly it is tough to make a case for the Royals at 11/8 (2.38) with William Hill.

It might be time for Rohit Sharma or Quinton de Kock to really tuck into Royals. So both make appeal at 5/2 (4.5) (Ladbrokes, William Hill and Coral) and 16/5 (4.2) (Betfair, Paddy Power) for top Mumbai bat respectively. But we’re also aware that no franchise is more hopeless in the death overs so cheap runs are available. Make a note of Kieron Pollard at 8/1 (9.0) with Ladbrokes and Hardik Pandya at 10/1 (11.0) with Ladbrokes and Coral.

Best tips for the match

K Pollard top MI bat 8/1 Ladbrokes

Hardik top MI bat 10/1 Ladbrokes, Coral

Kings XI Punjab v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IS Bindra International Stadium

Saturday 13 April, 15.30

The likely absence of Chris Gayle for Kings XI throws the top bat market wide open it would seem for this one. In fact, it surely makes KL Rahul even more value than normal at 13/5 (3.6). Only Gayle can come close from Kings XI to Rahul’s hit rate in winning top bat wagers and the 13/5 is almost three percentage probability points in our favour. Gayle twisted his back in defeat by Mumbai Indians on Wednesday and did not take to the field.

It would be a surprise if he played in this one. Kings consider him vital to their chances of qualification and the last thing they want to do is exacerbate a niggle. At 5s (6.0) with Ladbrokes, Mayank Agarwal will probably open in Gayle’s absence. It is also value.

Best tips for the match

KL Rahul top Kings bat 13/5 Bet365

M Agarwal top Kings bat 5/1 Ladbrokes
