Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says we have to keep betting the Aussie for top bat until the price is too short

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Tuesday 16 April, 15.30

For many at the start of the IPL 2019 this game would have been their final. And, of course, last year it was with the Super Kings taking the plaudits and completing an extraordinary comeback from ignominy.

This year the two teams are enjoying different fortunes. The Super Kings, still the most consistent IPL side ever, are running away with the ladder while Sunrisers are on a disastrous run. They have lost three on the spin and their play-off hopes are looking slim.

That’s not, in truth, purely because of their results. It’s the way they have been playing. It is no hard luck story. Their batting has been shown to be woefully inadequate and the latest disaster came against Delhi Capitals. It was their third bizarre and befuddling batting effort in a row.

Set what appeared to be a nominal 156 to win, Sunrisers were well on course when David Warner and Jonny Bairstow were circumspect but solid when putting on 72 for the first wicket. They then collapsed in spectacular fashion losing their last seven wickets for ten runs from the 17th over.

It is the sort of performance which puts us off betting them again this tournament. Not that we weren’t warned. Previously against Kings XI they had laboured to 150 in Mohali on what is a decent batting wicket. They were well-beaten. And before that against Mumbai they inexplicably folded in the hunt for a paltry 136, not even busting three figures.

So there is a slight surprise that the Super Kings, strong against Kolkata Knight Riders last time, are not bigger jollies. Betfair go 5/6 (1.83) Chennai and Ladbrokes 11/10 Sunrisers (1.91). Surely that’s a good bet about the Super Kings?

As ever with a Sunrisers match we return to the top-bat market to check whether the layers have wised up yet to Warner’s extraordinary hit rate of approaching 45 per cent. Nope. He is best at 2/1 with Bet365, Ladbrokes and Coral. One of these days they might do their home work. But fingers crossed they don’t.

With Warner so reliable it would be remiss not to consider betting him on other markets. Betfair go 16/5 (4.2) that he top scores overall in the match while the 7/1 (8.0) across the board that he takes the match gong will also appeal.

Best tips for the match

David Warner Top Sunrisers Bat 2/1
