Rajasthan Royals v Delhi Capitals, Sawai Mansingh International Stadium

Monday 22 April, 15.30

Take a good long look at this Rajasthan Royals team which takes on Delhi Capitals in Jaipur. You won’t see them for a long time.

Just as the play-off race is beginning to hot up – and Royals desperately need to put a sequence of victories together – they will have to rebuild their team. This is the last game for Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer before they have to return to England to prepare for World Cup duty. Jos Buttler has already gone home.

This is the spine of their team. Buttler is the Royals top runscorer and is much-needed to give their flaky batting a boost with his fast starts. Archer, slippery and quick, pegs back teams at the start and death of an innings. He is their top wicket-taker. Stokes, admittedly, has had a poor season but he probably gives those around him some self-assurance.

As if they needed any more upheaval, Royals have decided to sack their captain – Ajinkya Rahane. Steve Smith, the Aussie whizz who was done for ball tampering, gets the gig instead. It’s crazy stuff but Royals, at least, got a surprise win last time out against Mumbai Indians by an impressive five wickets.

They are 11/10 (2.1) to get another one here with Delhi, who are third after their win over Kings XI Punjab, best at 5/6 (1.83) with Betfair.

But we won’t be playing the match odds here. Given that Buttler is absent, Samson will have to step up to provide the fast starts. He is more than capable and with a ton under his belt already this season, he rates a fair crack at 10/3 (4.33) with Bet365 and William Hill. That’s a decent jump from Betfair who go as short as 13/5 (3.6).

Samson doesn’t have a huge amount to beat with Buttler out of the picture. Although Rahane and Smith are solid players, they don’t score runs as quickly. Nor will they be charged with doing so. Hopefully, we’ll be able to be on a man who will need to bat for a fraction of the time. Samson has a strike rate of 147, Smith 110 and Rahane 130.

Best tips for the match

Back Sanju Samson top Royals bat 10/3 Bet365, William Hill
