Chennai Super Kings v Sunrisers Hyderabad

MA Chidambarram International Stadium, Tuesday 23 April, 15.30

Chennai Super Kings’ air of invincibility has cleared to reveal an ordinary, error-prone very human outfit in the last two games. They have lost both. But they should relish the chance to avoid an unheard of three successive losses in front of their own fans.

It was Sunrisers who started the slide. Without MS Dhoni, Chennai lost five wickets for 22 runs to post only 132. And they were never in the hunt after David Warner and Jonny Bairstow went off like a rocket. They lost by six wickets with more than three overs to spare.

Such a loss could be out down to a bad day at the office. However, shock of shocks came a game later when they were beaten by no hopers Royal Challengers Bangalore. Chasers supreme, Chennai should have had no truck with a target of 162.

But they were in the mire at 28 for four and they were unable to recover despite MS Dhoni trying his dandiest. He almost got them home with remarkable late hitting.

Still, the eagle-eyed will have noted how Chennai chases are following a pattern. They are losing quick wickets, getting behind the rate and then fighting until the very last, sometimes coming out on top – notably against Rajasthan Royals.

We expect improvement here, not least because they will have been hurt by losing top spot to the Delhi Capitals. Dwayne Bravo is also back in the XI after overcoming an injury.

Ladbrokes and William Hill go 4/5 (1.80) about Chennai hitting back and that looks a decent price about a side normally so reliable at home. Note: both losses came on the road.

Sunrisers have steadied themselves after a wobble with two wins out of two but both came on their own patch. They will need to be at their absolute best to derail Chennai here.

And they have a significant issue with their batting which we’re not convinced has been solves after those wins against Chennai and Kolkata Knight Riders. Unless Warner and Bairstow get them off to a flyer they are in the soup. Sometimes they’re in it even with a solid start.

Best tips for the match

Back Chennai Super Kings 4/5 William Hill, Ladbrokes
