Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) thinks RCB’s upturn in form in IPL 2019 could come to a halt against Kings XI

They have won their last two matches, beating Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders by ten. Ordinarily such results would be the mark of a decent team but they remain bottom of the ladder.

With those two successes has come a return to being overrated on the match odds markets. Bet365 and William Hill go a ludicrous 8/11 (1.73) about the worst side in the competition. They are best at 4/5 (1.80) with Betfair, Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power. Kings XI are 11/10 (2.1) with Bet365 and William Hill.

It has been one of the golden rules of Indian Premier League betting, as discussed in our Bangalore team preview before a ball was bowled, that they are not top be touched when they go odds-on. We hardly need to repeat this mantra when they have won only thrice all season.

RCB have sorted their batting out. They worked hard to post 161 against Chennai, although they could have lived to have regretted not keeping Moeen Ali at No 4 to help his excellent form continue. Early wickets kept them in the game and they squeezed home after they appeared to have let Chennai off the hook.

They were also strong with the willow against Kolkata, posting 213. Early wickets were again key but, as usual, they lost their way in the middle overs and Andre Russell’s hitting almost got KKR’s noses ahead.

So RCB are reliable. They can bat. But they can’t bowl. No side is more expensive in the death overs and they lack the discipline and brains to keep getting away with it. Dale Steyn has made a huge difference to their work in the field but it would be folly to pin our hopes on just one man at such skinny odds.

Kings XI are inconsistent, winning five and losing five, but they are competitive and we like how they hang in there in tough games under some smart stewardship from Ravi Ashwin.

Of course they have flaws – over-reliant on KL Rahul and Chris Gayle and a tendency to take a gamble on five bowlers only – but, listen, if rule 1.01 of betting is wager only with money you can afford to lose, the next on the list is: oppose RCB at odds-on.

Best tips for the match

Back Kings XI 11/10 Bet365 and William Hill
