Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) says the tournament favourites will face their toughest test of the season against their old rivals

Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians, MA Chidambarram Stadium

Friday 26 April, 15.30

The grandees of IPL go head-to-head in what could, possibly should, be a prequel to the final in Hyderabad. Let’s hope it’s more competitive than their earlier meeting in this year’s tournament.

At the start of the month Mumbai had posted a competitive, but hardly impregnable 170, only for Chennai to give up the ghost ridiculously early. They lost their first two wickets for six runs and by the 15th over, when they should have been setting themselves up for a last-ditch assault, they only had 87 on the board. That day MS Dhoni bored everyone senseless with a 21-ball 12, a strike rate of 57. To put that in context it is slower than he bats in Test matches and 78 clicks south of his career T20 strike rate.

Chennai, then, should be up for this one. There is, perhaps, a sense that they are cowed against Mumbai, who have won five of the last seven. The Indians are also the last team to win in Chepauk (in 2015) and Chennai’s famed 60% win rate in IPL comes down to 44 against their big rivals.

The hosts are best at 20/23 (1.87) with Betfair while Mumbai are even money (2.0) with Bet365, Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes and William Hill.

On this year’s form, we have an inkling for Chennai. Mumbai have been too inconsistent for our liking and their batting, too often flaky and unreliable, could be caught in two minds against Chennai’s army of spinners on a turning track.

Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai captain, is having a poor season by his standards and although he has upped the ante by declaring this match cricket’s El Clasico, we can’t advise betting him for top bat at prohibitive prices in the region of 11/4 (3.75) with Betfair and Paddy Power.

Instead big hitters like the Pandya brothers against catch the eye. Krunal is 9/1 (10.0) with Betfred and Hardik 7/1 (8.0) with Bet365 and William Hill.

For man of the match Chennai spinners Imran Tahir and Harbhajan Singh have been lethal on this surface. Tahir is 14s (15.0) with Bet365 and Harbhajan is a whopper at 20s (21.0) with Betfair and Paddy Power.

Best tips for the match

Hardik Pandya top MI bat 7/1 Bet365 and William Hill
