Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians, MA

Chidambarram Stadium, Chepauk
Wednesday 7 May

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians face off then in the first play-off game. Remember, this is not knockout cricket. This is what is cannily called the IPL qualifier

This is why teams who qualified yonks ago are still supposed to be stretching every sinew. The top two get two bites at the cherry of qualifying for the final as a reward for their superior form in the league section.

The winner goes straight to the final. The loser will take on the winner of the first eliminator between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad (yes, they made it although we’re not sure how).

Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai, by dint of finishing top of the section and a 2-0 record against Chennai this season, are favourites for the title at no better than 6/4 (2.5) with Bet365. Chennai are next best at 13/8 (2.63) with Betfair and Paddy Power. Delhi are 6/1 (7.0) with Ladbrokes, Betfred and Coral while Sunrisers, surely irrelevant, are 7/1 (8.0) with Coral and Ladbrokes,

The other reason for Mumbai favouritism is their excellent record at Chepauk. They have won four of the last six and have had no fear against Chennai’s army of spinners. They are narrow favourites for the easy route at 10/11 (1.91) with William Hill and Betfred. Chennai, incredibly, are marginal outsiders at home and the 20/21 (1.95) from BetClic is very tempting indeed about a team which is the best in tournament history.

And, to be frank, we’ve not been impressed by Mumbai. Sure, they finished top but a lot of the time they played lazy cricket, their batting hasn’t really fired and they have turned in some stinkers in terms of performances. In game one against Delhi for example and 46 games later against Kolkata. They also lost twice to Rajasthan Royals. Go figure.

We’re just not sure whether a team can get away with turning it on and off when they fancy and although Chennai have been guilty of that, too, we’re happy to bet them at the odds. Despite the head-to-heads we are wowed by Chennai’s spin attack. Not by Mumbai’s. Just another area where things could catch up with them.

Best tip for the match
Chennai to win 1.95 (20/21) BetClic
