But they seemed to have pulled a sly fast one if recent form is any-thing to go by.

The Foxes have caused two major upsets in their last three games, beating Worcestershire Rapids and the Nottinghamshire Outlaws. They had previously lost their first three matches. Clearly they were lulling everyone into a false sense of security.

The North section still makes grim reading, though. They are second-bottom. Despite that standing it is hard not to respect them for those performances against Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire. Worcestershire, after all, are the defending champions and they were hammered.

Leicestershire batted first and made a respectable 152 but they went into overdrive with the ball, razing the Rapids for just 119. Against Notts they produced a perfect display in a rain-affected game. Off 11 overs they blitzed 125 and then held their nerve in the face of a strong batting line-up.

Birmingham will be sweating, then. They have two wins and two defeats and need to put a run together to get into the knockout mix. Their form is patchy. They managed a tie against Yorkshire last time out but they were hammered by Nottinghamshire and suffered an embarrassing loss to a weak Northamptonshire Steelbacks outfit.

It is that result which puts us off getting involved on them at 1.67 (4/6) with Bet365. The Foxes are 2.38 (11/8) with Ladbrokes. The gulf doesn’t seem justified to us, not by much admittedly.

For top-bat bets, Mark Cosgrove, the tubby Foxes hitter, has a 45 per cent and 25 per cent win rate respectively in 2017 and 2018. Across the board 4.0 (3/1) is available about the Australian opener and one suspects that the 3.75 (11/4) on offer from Betfair and Paddy Power is the correct price. Cosgrove is in decent touch. He got that innings against Notts off to a flyer with a brutal 37 from 23 and we’re hopeful that he can be as dangerous again.

Best Bet

Back Mark Cosgrove top Leicestershire Foxes bat 4.0 Bet365
