Northamptonshire Steelbacks vs Derbyshire Falcons

Friday 2 August 2019 at Wantage Road Stadium

With just two wins between the Steelbacks and the Falcons this Blast season this is a clash of mediocrity. And that’s probably being kind.

It’s a sad sight to see Northants struggling so. They used to be the kings of this format. But players have been lost – notably Richard Gleeson to Lancashire Light-ning – and their aura has vanished. It is no exaggeration to say teams feared go-ing to Wantage Road to take them on. They were superb and won the title in 2013 and 2016. They were runners-up in 2015.

Still, they come into the contest on the back of a rare win. Only their third in their last ten. They beat Birmingham Bears by 21 runs after Rob Keogh, with his first T20 half-century, and Alex Wakeley got them to a respectable 155.

Faheem Ashraf, the Pakistan international, made all the difference with the ball. He nipped out two and if he can be consistent then his pace could bridge the gap between some of the better outfits. Dwaine Pretorius, the South African, is also highly capable and he also needs to step up.

Derbyshire, alas, have less quality to call on. They lost Billy Stanlake, the Aus-tralia pace bowler, to injury. Ravi Rampaul, a veteran of the franchise circuit, came in. They are short on bowling options, though, and there is particular con-cern for their spin department. With the bat Wayne Madsen is underrated and Billy Godleman solid. Darren Ste-vens’ nous with bat and ball could win them a tight game or two.

The bookies are struggling to split the pair, which is not surprising. But if we fo-cus on man for man it is possible to feel confident about Northants taking the win at 1.8 (4/5).

If those odds are too skinny and the two teams too flaky, a 5.0 (4/1) gamble on Madsen to top score for Derbyshire makes sense. Unibet are toppy with this price considering, by our numbers, he should be more like [4.0] (3/1).

Best Bets

Back Wayne Madsen top Derbyshire runscorer 5.0 Unibet
