What are the hot tips and best match bets for the North Group contest in the T20 tournament?

Worcestershire Rapids vs Northamptonshire Steelbacks

Sunday 11 August 2019 at New Road

Last year’s Vitality Blast winners, the Worcestershire Rapids, have been in solid form so far and have been hanging on to the coattails of North group leaders Lancashire Lightning.

And after a disappointing defeat by Leicestershire Foxes, who are the form team in the competition, they could be handed a boost just in time. England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been jettisoned from the Ashes squad for the second Test against Australia at Lord’s, which starts next Thursday, and he could be available if his modd is okay.

With Martin Guptill, the New Zealand opening batsman, Callum Ferguson, the Aussie hitter and a relaxed Moeen away from the firing line, Worcestershire have a fearsome top order for the Steelbacks to try to keep quiet.

It’s not surprising, then, that William Hill go as short as 1.57 (4/7) about the home team. This is about as short as it gets for a unit on the match odds in this format, no matter whether you’re talking Blast, Bash or Indian Premier League.

That makes us a little nervous. Northants, granted, are one of the weakest around but they have picked up recently. And conditions in Worcester could make this a shootout. Rain is ex-pected in the city for much of the day and if they do get out on to the field, a stodgy wicket and help for the seamers could make this is a closer contest than the layers expect.

Northants’ game at Leicester could have been the ideal preparation. They bowled first, re-stricting the Foxes to 139. They would have expected to win before the rain spoiled things. It could have been their third win in four matches.

For top bats, the Worcestershire market place is crowded. Willliam Hill can’t split Moeen, Guptill, Ferguson and Riki Wessels – all at 4.5 (7/2). Given we know Guptill is guaranteed to open it could be argued he’s the value because of the possibility of a reduced-overs contest. For Northants Josh Cobb probably should be shorter than 4.5 (7/2) across the board.

Best Bet

Back Martin Guptill top Worcestershire bat 4.5 William Hill
