The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will head to Busan, South Korea for the final fight card of 2019. Omar Morales will be highlighted in this week’s fight prediction for Octagon Cynosure.

With the Korean Dong Hyun Ma in the opposite corner, Morales will need to be prepared to take on Ma and the hostile environment.

Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Omar Morales was raised by a family that was already invested into martial arts. His father would train in various martial arts even creating his own form of combat called ‘slam’ which became well-known in Venezuela, making his father a martial arts figure in the community.

Before his evolution into the MMA world, Omar was highly trained by his father in full contact kick-boxing. Unable to avoid his love for combat sports, no matter how passionate Omar would become over other subjects, MMA was always at the forefront.

Omar would play all sports at school and even once dreamed of a baseball career but those dreams would become distant at the age of 17 when Omar began training in MMA full time. It wasn’t until 2011 (aged 26) that Omar made his MMA debut, full combat kickboxing was put to the side so he could pursue his true love.

Now aged 34, Omar has nothing left but to leave it all in the octagon. It’s taken him longer than expected (due to injuries) to reach the big stage, but after an impressive win inside the distance in front of Dana White, Omar was gifted with a UFC contract.

An 8-year journey in regional and national MMA organisations with an undefeated record has finally landed Omar his big opportunity. He might not be the youngest Lightweight to be newly signed by the UFC but Omar has all the potential to put on some entertaining fights for his Venezuelan supporters. With a newfound home at ‘Hard Knocks MMA’, Omar has the likes of current Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (amongst others) at his disposal; for the knowledge and experience, he might lack.

Omar Morales vs Dong Hyun Ma ‘Fight Talk’

A first glance at Omar’s record would give the illusion that he’s inexperienced. Don’t be fooled because as mentioned above, before professional MMA competitions Omar was raised into a combat sports family. His father is legendary and his love for fighting has always been present. Experience against high-level opposition can definitely be debated but his opponent this weekend shouldn’t cause the kickboxer too many problems.

Dong Hyun Ma has floating around the UFC roster for quite a while now and hasn’t proven to be a cause for concern for anyone. With 4 losses and 3 wins, Ma has shown vulnerability when succumbing to a striking battle. All of his losses in the UFC have come by way of knockout; alarm bells should be ringing for all martial arts handicappers when breaking this fight down.

I wasn’t overly impressed with Omar in his DWCS debut but, he has shown more than enough fight IQ to give us hope when facing a low-level opponent like Ma. The fight card taking place in South Korea simply needs Korean fighters; unfortunately, not every country has enough talent to stack the event with future stars… Ma is a filler.

The Outcome

It’s almost impossible to ignore Ma’s concerning history of stoppages against him. It's one thing to lose 4 contests in the UFC but it’s another to lose them all by KO or TKO. Omar has finished opponents more durable than Ma which leads me to believe he’ll have no trouble finding the button on Ma’s chin at some point across the 15-minute brawl.

No matter what, it always seems like Ma can’t avoid a dangerous striking exchange. Ma has already fought twice in 2019, both fights he lost by TKO. Scott Holtzman isn’t exactly known for his punching power but still managed to cause enough damage to Ma for the officials to stop the fight.

Omar is no spring chicken but he’s certainly taken less damage in his career in comparison to Ma, Ma has the unnerving task of fighting in his country coming off back to back TKO losses. I’ll take the DWCS hopeful in his official UFC debut over the knockout prone Korean who can’t defend incoming strikes too well.

UFC Busan Prediction: 1.5u on Omar Morales @ [1.53] [-188] with Bet365

UFC Busan will be on Saturday the 21st December live from Busan, South Korea
