The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will head back to Russia for the third time this year. CSKA Arena will play host to 12 action-packed MMA contests including Featherweight title runners Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Calvin Kattar.

Roosevelt Roberts

UFC Lightweight prospect ‘Roosevelt Roberts’ returns to the UFC octagon this weekend in Moscow; in what’s should be an entertaining striking clinic from the American.

In Robert’s teenage years he would find himself on the mean streets of Miami, hustling the road to earn a living. It would take imprisonment combined with the support Roberts would need to give to his new-born child that would finally snap his bad habits. The now, 24 years old took up MMA and would never look back.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Roberts is no stranger to facing the heat, and that’s what he’ll be up against when taking a fight on 16 days’ notice in Russia. From a sofa-surfing criminal lifestyle, Roberts would find solace in mixed martial arts. After dominating the amateur scene, his professional debut continued this form.

Bellator would be the first company to notice Roberts but, almost instantly after winning his debut by TKO, the UFC was ready for another season of ‘Dana Whites Contender Series’. A show that gives professional mixed martial artists the opportunity to earn a UFC contract.

Roberts would continue to show the world why he is destined for greatness, Garrett Gross would fall victim to a second-round rear-naked choke and once again, Roberts walked away from the octagon victorious. The showcase Roberts put on would be more than enough for UFC boss Dana White to offer a 3-fight contract.

Technically, “octagon jitters” were already conquered by Roberts as he’d fought on DWCS so when making his debut on the Ultimate Fighter Finale show, nobody was surprised when he synched up another submission win against Darrell Horcher.

Robert’s is the new breed of MMA fighter who has trained specifically in all areas of martial arts since the beginning of his career, he’s a prototype of the future and with his experience at such a young age, and I expect a bright future for the American.

Roberts’s vs Yakovlev Fight Talk

Alexander Yakovlev vs Roosevelt Roberts - Fight Odds
Saturday 9th, Nov 2019

Roberts will be taking this fight on 16 days’ notice and will face a Russian in his own back yard. You have to respect the grind, especially with the experience that Yakovlev holds over Roberts.

Alexander Yakovlev will make his 8th walk to the UFC octagon on Saturday and will be sure to want this one played out on his terms. His clear advantage would be to grapple with Roberts and make this a long, grinding fight on the floor or against the cage. Problem is, the Sambo champion and hand to hand combat champion doesn’t have the greatest offensive wrestling, I don’t think the threat of a takedown will be a huge problem for Roberts.

Although Roberts has finished a lot of his contests via submission victory, I doubt he’s going to welcome a ground war with Yakovlev. The striking advantage for Roberts should be huge; he’s faster, more precise and simple, better at it.

The game-plan for Yakovlev, get this fight to the ground. Hold position and attack from guard whilst posing a submission threat. The game plan for Roberts, keep his distance and win the stand-up war across three, five-minute rounds.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FeV7Mmf5EyE" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Outcome

Congratulations to the bookmaker, I think they’ve set the line on this fight almost perfectly. The youth, hunger, speed and striking ability of Roberts should be more than enough to keep the Russian at bay. I wouldn’t be surprised if the former Sambo champion did manage to take Roberts to the ground but, I doubt he’ll be able to keep him there for all three rounds.

Yakovlev is no spring chicken and even though he’s been with the UFC for over 4 years, his octagon activity has been low. He’s come up short on multiple occasions when faced with a more proficient striker. I think Yakovlev will attempt to box with Roberts but come up short, the ageing 35-year-old is going to struggle this weekend against the young up and comer that is Roosevelt Roberts.

UFC Fight Night 163 Prediction: 1.5u on Roosevelt Roberts @ [1.64] [-156] with Coral

UFC Moscow: Zabit vs Kattar will be on Saturday the 9th November live from the CSKA Arena in Moscow, Russia.
