After a painful week with no UFC on TV, we were back in business with one of the biggest Co-Main and Main events of the year at UFC 236 last night in Atlanta.

Post-Fight Analysis / Recap

‘Dogs and Their Odds’

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Nikita Krylov

Nikita started off very aggressive, which was expected given his fighting style. From the bell, he seemed to get the better of OSP until Ovince landed a perfectly timed takedown and gained the advantage.

Krylov did eventually get up but was instantly met with another takedown attempt from OSP, and back to the mat, he went. It was very clear to see at this point, OSP was the more effective wrestler. Krylov could have been in trouble for a moment as OSP got the full mount but nothing came from it.

Back on their feet, OSP looked tired and slow. The defensive stance wasn’t giving me any good signs at this point. It was a good first round for OSP, but his gas tank looked very concerning.

Coming into the second round OSP was clearly avoiding any type of striking battle with Krylov as he sprawled the takedown attempts. His lack of energy cost him a valuable ground position.

Krylov secured a great full mounted position and finished the fight with a rear naked choke, getting the revenge he has been seeking since his loss to OSP back in 2014.

Final Result: Nikita Krylov def. Well, that didn’t go to plan, Dwight returned fire and swung some massive haymakers towards Jouban…damn! They were close.

Dwight Grant's explosive striking power from any angle and fire fighting whilst backing up is very impressive, I’m excited to see his progression a few fights down the line.

In the second round, Jouban seems to have his movement and timing more on point, but his output is still very low and we saw a small amount of striking offence from Jouban. Dwight is sticking to the game plan, Jouban did seem to get more comfortable the longer the fight goes on but he wasn’t willing to take any risks, and I weren’t surprised with power Grant has.

Playing it smart defensively whilst forgetting your offence wasn’t going to win Jouban the fight, plenty of movement again by Jouban in round three but yet again… little to no output. In the final seconds of the fight, Jouban managed his second takedown of the fight, but it was too little too late. The fans weren’t shy of showing their emotions, as the fight ended with boos echoing the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Nothing spectacular from Dwight, but he got the job done by winning on the judges scorecards and managed to cash with our ‘Dogs and Their Odds’ article.

Dwight Grant cashes at 1.95 with William Hill

‘The Weekly Punching Parlay Episode 7’

Montel Jackson vs. Andre Soukhamthath

Montel Jackson started the first round nicely with some distance striking, plenty of jabs and good movement. I didn’t expect Montel to be such a superior striker but Andre seemed to struggle. Not dealing very well with the southpaw stance, Andre was being made to look like the lesser striker of the two and then it wasn’t long before Montel used his striking to enter in on a takedown and let his elite wrestling come into play,

As predicted, Montel found comfort in the takedown. At will, he was able to take Andre down. Starting round two, Andre seemed to have a lot more output and aggression moving forward. Jackson was defending very well, his distance management and head movement were top notch. Andre survived an onslaught of strikes towards the end of round two and was lucky to survive. Another dominant round for Jackson. Back and forth striking and a low blow later Andre managed a takedown on Jackson but was quickly swept and reversed then Andre found himself on the bottom.

Montel Jackson with complete top control to end the fight and it was clear Montel was taking the win on the scorecards cashing the first leg of this weeks ‘Punching Parlay’.

Israel Adesanya vs. Kelvin Gastelum

The moment we had all been waiting for, my blood pressure was through the roof… my female companion had fallen asleep so bored with my excitement, it was time… not hammer time, but Israel s ‘Style Bender’ Adesanya time.

Both men came out striking cautiously, as expected with so much on the line. It was halfway into the first round where Kelvin had me worried when he dropped Adesanya with a left hook. The most danger we’ve ever seen Adesanya in before, Gastelum was throwing some serious hands in the path of Adesanya. This barrage from Kelvin was either going to light a fire under Israel or make him a little less confident, knowing that Kelvin had caught him.

Another striking battle in round two, halfway in Adesanya returned the favour from the first round and knocked Kelvin down. He quickly tried to meet him on the ground with strikes but Gastelum managed to get back to his feet. Israel is seemed to find his groove in round two, his timing and accuracy were better than in the first and he was telegraphing what Kelvin is dished out.

Israel continued to pick up speed the more the fight went on, the way he can mix up his striking so effectively just leaves his opponents guessing. Precise striking from Israel and the reach disadvantage left Kelvin helpless at times. Gastelum dropped Israel again towards the end of the fourth but Israel has no quit and fired back with strikes. Not sure on Kelvin survived round five, Israel truly showed us he has champion spirit. The fight should have probably been stopped towards the final 10 seconds but the referee allowed Kelvin to take some serious damage. And new…UFC Middleweight Champion, Israel Adesanya!!

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

That championship feeling!

🏆 @stylebender #UFC236 pic.twitter.com/TcmAGF4wz5
— ESPN MMA (@espnmma) 14 de abril de 2019
\n"}[/]

The Weekly Punching Parlay cashes again, we’ve now hit a seven in a row.
