Post-Fight Analysis/Recap

‘The Weekly Punching Parlay Season 2 Episode 1’

Raoni Barcelos vs Carlos Huachin

Barcelos came out in the first round as the aggressor, both men stood toe to toe for the entire five minutes and swung leather. Carlos did well to read many of Barcelo's strikes and seemed to improve on his own reckless striking from previous fights. Carlos did well in the exchanges but I would still give Barcelos round one based on aggression and significant strikes.

Round two began how the first left off, both men putting on a striking clinic. Halfway into the second Barcelos lands a devastating right hook and put Carlos down, Barcelos pounced on Carlos with punches and took control on the ground. Huachin attempted to escape but had no chance against the overly skilled grappler that Barcelos is.

Ending the night in style, after controlling Carlos on the mat for a good minute with transition’s and striking… Barcelos landed some top-heavy elbows and the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

Raoni Barcelos def. Carlos Huachin via TKO Elbow

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Agree w/ the stoppage? @RaoniBarcelos stops Huachin at #UFC237! pic.twitter.com/43w6Gi23Um
— UFC (@ufc) 11 de maio de 2019
\n"}[/]

Clay Guida vs BJ Penn

The legends kick off the preliminary section of the fight card and impressed with a striking battle, surprisingly to me Clay decided to stand and bang with BJ and attempted zero takedowns in the first round. I’d edge the first round to Clay but BJ was certainly looking relatively livelier against an older opponent in Clay as the first round ended. At this point, I was hoping the leg kicks Clay consistently landed in the first might edge his chance of taking this to the floor and ending it because the longer the fighter goes the less chance for Clay to finish inside the distance.

As expected, Clay Guida and his cardio never fail. In round two BJ was looking a lot slower and breathing heavy. Not much changed from the first other than BJs output seemed to be lower. Towards the end of the second Clay landed a great leg kick and BJ saw stars, Clay took him down but the rounded ended before he could get the finish… so close!

Looking dead on his feet the third round continued with Clay coming in with launching strikes and again Penn is wobbly on his feet, I was almost certain at this point that five minutes was more than enough time for Clay to finish this one. Leg kicks and strikes once again had Penn wobbly but instead of finishing the fight Clay decided to wrestle Penn up against the cage, he must think in his head that he needs to secure the decision victory rather than finish the fight. I noticed Clay was becoming gassed himself but it wasn’t going to take much effort to end BJs night. With too much time wasted wrestling, Clay Guida became the punching parlays kryptonite as he fails to finish the fight inside the distance and gives us our first L to date. Securing the victory was easy and I should have perhaps ignored the added value and just settled for the safer option.

Clay Guida def. BJ Penn by Unanimous Decision

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Guida gets it done by UD!@ClayGuida #UFC237 pic.twitter.com/wRCaf0Zbbi
— UFC (@ufc) 12 de maio de 2019
\n"}[/]

Irene Aldana vs Bethe Correia

From the start of the first round until the end of the entire fight Irene Aldana utilized her range and jab perfectly! Bethe impressed me way more than expected but just couldn’t get on the inside of Aldana without falling into a clinch and some nasty striking return. The first round came to an end and Bethe had swelled under her eyes from the number of jabs received.

By the second round, it was clear how this fight was going to pan out, Irene can comfortably win this fight by decision unless Bethe picks up the pace and changes her game plan. That said, she certainly upped her tempo in the second. Bethe managed to get on the inside a few good times but Aldana did great at sticking and moving. Arguably we could give Bethe the win in round two as Aldana was pressured constantly fighting off her back foot.

Round three could be the deciding round and considering the event was in Brazil and Bethe is Brazilian, Irene must have had that thought in the back of her mind and if she did… it showed with her round three dominance. A little desperation from Bethe with a sloppy takedown was beautifully countered by Irene as she scrambled and ended up on Bethe’s back, grabs the arm of Bethe and forces her to tap ending the fight by armbar.

Irene Aldana def. Bethe Correia by Armbar Submission

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

\"I feel great, I feel my career is going to the next level now.\"

Hear @IreneAldana_ talk about where she feels like she is at in her career after he big-time submission win over Bethe Correia at #UFC237 🔊🆙 pic.twitter.com/pVe7saLSya
— UFC News (@UFCNews) 12 de maio de 2019
\n"}[/]

‘The Weekly Punching Parlay’ went on a 10-0 streak in Season 1, with the first episode of the second season serving us our first loss in nearly 3 months!!! I cannot complain. Of course, I would have loved to continue on a winning streak but even 10-0 was starting to become unrealistic in expectations. I have sat and examined the parlay all day and by raising the risk probability and stake was a bad move on my behalf, playing Guida inside the distance was a risk I was willing to take and it nearly paid off… we were very close to the 11-0 but unfortunately, Clay couldn’t see how messed up BJ was and didn’t capitalize. If you listen to the replay you can legitimately here Clay Guida’s coach and father screaming “stop wrestling, he’s out on his feet, finish him”, anyway… we’ll be back with episode 2 next week and hopefully, we can start a new winning streak.

‘Dogs and Their Odds’

Kurt Holobaugh vs Thiago Moises

This may have been one of my worst reads this year as Kurt Holobaugh was just an embarrassment when comparing my write up on him and how the fight took place. After starting the fight with some average striking Kurt realised, he wasn’t doing so well and went in for the takedown, after failing a second time I saw Kurt’s confidence evaporate as he knew it wasn’t going to be an easy night. Moises took the fight to the ground and controlled it with ease, landing strikes and securing the position he wanted.

Second right started and clearly, Thiago was going to attempt the takedown again when it was so simple for him to secure the first-time around. Another round with all the control coming from Thiago and when on the feet, Kurt was still looking lost.

Third round and Kurt came out aggressive and then paid for It in the shape of a right hook, looking dazed so Thiago capitalized with another takedown and landed straight into half guard. At this point, it was clear as day Kurt had no hope of winning this one and he isn’t half as tough experienced and skilful as I first anticipated.

Thiago Moises def. Kurt Holobaugh via Unanimous Decision

Jared Cannonier vs Anderson Silva

It’s never nice to witness an injury but even more so when it’s the legend Anderson Silva in his home country. The fight started out as expected, Silva using his length and keeping Jared at bay lading the jab. Jared seemed to find his reach at leg length because he began landing some sneaky leg kicks on Anderson. At this point I was so confident in Anderson; he is actually looking great on the feet and

Cannonier wasn’t offering much in terms of output and then… crunch! Jaren land’s a powerful leg kick then Anderson’s leg couldn’t hold him up, Anderson was writhing in pain holding onto his leg as the referee called the fight off. Déjà vu struck as the memories of Anderson vs Weidman crept into my thought’s, wishing a speedy recovery for ‘The Spider’.

Jared Cannonier def. Anderson Silva via Referee Stoppage (Leg Injury)

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

After a leg injury that ended his bout by first round KO, @SpiderAnderson is helped out of the Octagon #UFC237 pic.twitter.com/gWgk0pay2M
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) 12 de maio de 2019
\n"}[/]

The Main Event Madness!!!

Although I didn’t cover the main event in my publications this week It would be absurd of me not to give a mention to the new female champion Jessica Andrade. In what looked to be a dominant striking performance by Rose in the first four minutes, Jess used her power and left Rose unconscious from a devastating slam. Rumour has it Rose wants to retire, I would plea with Rose not to quit until the cows come home because she was dominating Jess up until the slam.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

WOW!
