Can Feliciana Spencer get the job done on saturday night?

Another phenomenal weekend for the Odds Market MMA team. Last weekend Dave Bets crushed it with his weekly articles, and I was able to sustain our momentum on the ‘Squared Up’ series. With a 77% win rate over our last 13 events, UFC 240 presents a great opportunity to bank more units.

Saturday night’s co-main event is a featured women’s featherweight bout when Felicia Spencer squares up against Cris Cyborg. Spencer who is a former Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion found success in her UFC debut by submitting Megan Anderson in round one. On the flip side, Cris Cyborg steps into the cage Saturday night off a loss for the first time in over a decade. Can Spencer keep her momentum? Will Cyborg get back on track? Let’s break it down and find the edge!

FELICIA SPENCER (7-0) vs CRIS (CYBORG) JUSTINO (20-2)

Saturday 27th, Jul 2019

Felicia Spencer:

Considering that Felicia Spencer has only fought seven times professionally, there is not a ton of info we were able to find on her. What little we did find, I’ll relay to you now. Spencer grew up in Quebec training in two practices of mixed martial arts. Before becoming a professional MMA fighter she obtained a black belt in both Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 2015 Spencer made her debut for the Invicta FC promotion. She won her debut against Rachel Wiley by TKO in round one. By her last fight for the Invicta FC promotion she had won all five fights and found herself fighting for the vacant Invicta FC featherweight championship against Pam Sorenson. She would go on to win the vacant title by rear naked choke in round 4. Following the fight, the UFC offered her a multi fight contract. In May of 2019 Spencer made her debut against prospect Megan Anderson. In an upset, Spencer defeated Anderson in the first round and now finds herself with the biggest opportunity of her short MMA career. A win over Cris Cyborg would rocket her to UFC stardom. Can she get the job done?

STATS:

PROS:

• Wrestling (In all 7 professional fights, she has had a strong edge in her wrestling top control game. I would consider this a bigger strength if not for the weak competition she has faced.)

• Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (She has found her way to her opponents backs often. She has 4 victories in 7 pro fights all by way of rear naked choke.)

• Strength (She does seem to have a strength advantage in most fights. Again, it is so hard to tell how good she is based on the level of competition.)

CONS:

• Striking Offense (It doesn’t exist.)

• Striking Defense ( See: Striking Offense.)

• Fight IQ (There are so many styles in the Octagon that she hasn’t seen. So many situations that she hasn’t been in. She probably has the worst Fight IQ for anyone that we have ever written about in the ‘Squared Up’ series. It may very well be because she is still a novice, and with more fights comes more learning.)

• The Unknown (In the end, there are more things that we don’t know about Felicia Spencer than what we do know. From a betting perspective, that’s a problem.)

Cris (Cyborg) Justino:

What is there left to say about Cris Cyborg? She was the most feared women’s MMA fighter on the planet for over a decade until Amanda Nunes came along last year and knocked her off that perch. Cyborg came up in the Elite XC and Strikeforce promotions from 2008-2016. Finally in May of 2016 she signed with the UFC. Cris Cyborg was so incredibly dominant that she did not lose a fight from December 2005 – December 2018. That is absolutely absurd. She was known for having the heaviest female hands in the world with a ridiculous 17 wins by knockout. The most intriguing aspect of this fight is how will Cris Cyborg respond off her first loss in mixed martial arts since 2005. Will she get back on the horse and return to dominating ways or will the up and coming grapple from Canada give her a real run for the money?

STATS:

PROS:

• Power (She doesn’t just have power in her hands. She has mind altering insanity type power for a female mixed martial artist.)

• Volume (She comes out and throws everything but the kitchen sink at you in the first round of these fights. Unfortunately for her opponents that make it to the 2nd round that’s when the kitchen sink gets thrown.)

• Pressure (She controls the Octagon from the moment the referee starts the fight. Part of what makes her striking so dominant is the footwork and angles that she cuts to give her opponents as little space to navigate as possible.)

• Top Control (Her ground and pound skills are as good as half the men on the roster. If her opponent is on their back and she is on top of them raining down blows... pray.

CONS:

• The Unknown (OK, so let’s start here. She has no real flaws or CONS. I won’t disrespect the woman like that. She lost 1 fight since 2005 lol, c’mon man. The one thing I will say about this fight that may or may not be a CON is the unknown. We have no idea how Cris Cyborg will react off the loss to Amanda Nunes. My guess is pretty well considering she lost her first fight and then won 19 straight. Nevertheless it is an unknown and could be a detriment.

THE VERDICT

This is the bottom line. There is one woman in the world that can beat Cris Cyborg Justino and that is Amanda Nunes. Nobody else in women’s MMA has held a candle to her for the better part of 15 years and I expect nothing to change this Saturday. Felicia Spencer is slow, inexperienced, doesn’t know how to throw her hands, has zero defensive striking skills, and has the fight IQ of a fighter with 7 professional fights. She is a one trick pony that attaches herself to you, wrestles you down to the ground, takes your back and sinks in a rear naked choke.

If you think that is the resume that is going to beat one of the greatest women’s MMA fighters of all time off her first loss since 2005, call me and I’ll hold that bet.

(The sports books are scared and still haven’t dropped the Cyborg by TKO props yet because they know the world is going to lay the wood BIG on her, and I will be on of them. If the Cyborg by TKO prop is anything under (1.35) the bet is valid and a go. I assume it will be under that. You might want to take a look at the Cyborg by TKO in Round 1 prop also. It could be a quick night.)

The Pick:

Cris Cyborg by TKO at (anything under) 5/14 (1.35) 1u
