Will the underdog prevail or do we see ‘The Eagle’ continue his dominant reign?

For the third time in UFC history, the production team and the entire UFC workforce will make its way across the pond to the beautiful Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. A huge fan base expected for the current undefeated, undisputed Lightweight Champion of the world Khabib ‘The Eagle Nurmagomedov’ as the population in Abu Dhabi follows the Muslim religion… Also, home to one of the largest Mosques in the world, allowing up to 41 thousand Muslims to worship simultaneously at the Sheikh Zayed. Sound’s great for a practising Muslim like Khabib Nurmagomedov and he’s almost guaranteed a flock of fan’s cheering him on for UFC 242.

The Yas Island arena will play host, and I won’t underestimate Dustin Poirier’s fan base either. 1000’s of Americans will be travelling to support their Interim Champion as he is no doubt one of the UFC’s biggest fan favourites.

September 7th is going to be a historic night and if you haven’t already… then please mark that night off on your calendar and prepare yourself for one of the most anticipated Lightweight bouts of all time.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Where do we start? The greatest grappler in UFC history? The only champion in the UFC with zero losses on his record? The list of achievements is going to be endless when it comes to discussing ‘The Eagle’ but one thing is for sure, Dustin Poirier will arrive in Abu Dhabi to try and end the amazing record that Khabib holds so dearly.

Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov made his mixed martial arts debut in 2008. He is a two-time Sambo world champion and the current reigning, defending UFC Lightweight Champion of the world. Khabib has the longest win streak in MMA history, with 27 consecutive wins under his belt. Not only that, the first-ever Russian Champion fought in the biggest ever PPV headline main event against Conor McGregor and submitted him inside the distance. It drew a record 2.4 million pay-per-view buys and gave Khabib the title of #3 pound for pound best in the world.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Khabib: \"Let's talk now!\"

Conor: \"It's only business...\"

The Champ had plenty to say to McGregor during the fight 🗣

Conor replied at the end of round three 👀#UFC229 pic.twitter.com/hRRuv6yzMA
— Watch #UFC241 live on BT Sport 1 HD (@btsportufc) 10 de outubro de 2018
\n"}[/]

Khabib could arguably be the greatest grappler the Lightweight division has ever seen or will ever see, the relentless pressure against the cage and then on the ground isn’t a talent obtained overnight. Years of wrestling raised in one of the toughest grappling nations on the planet has given Khabib that huge edge in grappling we witness in almost all of his fights. Dustin Poirier will have the toughest test to date when he steps inside the octogen with ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Best Priced @ [1.29] [-350] [2/7] with Bet365

Dustin Poirier

Well, well… Who hasn’t this man defeated? Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis, Max Holloway (Twice!!) and whilst doing that has only seen the judge’s scorecard three times in six years!! With a humble attitude and ferocious fight game, this father from Louisiana, USA will face the toughest fight of his life but simultaneously dish out to Khabib the toughest fight of his also.

Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier made his professional MMA debut in 2009, he made his come-up on the regional scene before joining WEC and then after a merge, the UFC. He holds a 16-2-0 record at Lightweight and 17-4-0 overall. Dustin is riding a 5-fight win streak and will be looking to make history on September 7th.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Just two warriors leaving it all in the octagon 👊

When Dustin Poirier met Justin Gaethje at UFC Glendale, we were treated to one of the best fights of 2018 🙌pic.twitter.com/A8KyBjFkcI
— Watch #UFC241 live on BT Sport 1 HD (@btsportufc) 28 de dezembro de 2018
\n"}[/]

Dustin possesses some of the crispest striking combinations in the biz, 16 wins at Lightweight and only three of those bouts ended by decision. He is a highlight reel machine and one of the most fluent boxers in the division, toughness and heart don’t come easy when you’re getting punched in the face but Dustin’s durability and cardio seem endless…which are key attributes he will need when facing the undefeated Champ.

Dustin Poirier Best Priced @ [3.80] [+275] [11/4] with Coral

The Odds and Prediction

As much as I appreciate Poirier as a person and a fighter, he might be shit out of luck in this one. Khabib isn’t going to allow Poirier to take control of this fight by standing and striking, it’s obvious as we see it in the majority of Khabib’s scraps that he will initiate some form of grappling one way or another and pressure his opponent the entire fight… either winning by finish or decision.

However, I do like Dustin’s chances of staying alive in this one… Over 2.5 rounds or fight to go the distance might be worth a look as Poirier is not the type of fighter to quit. When Khabib does find a takedown, I’m confident enough that Dustin can survive the ground strikes Khabib will land. Working out of American Top Team provides Poirier with all the defensive wrestling training he will need and he is no slouch in the Brazilian Ju-Jitsu department either.

Fight goes the distance @ [1.95] [-105] [19/20] with 5Dimes

UFC 242 will take place on September 7th live from Abu Dhabi, European fans will be gifted with an early Main Card start time of 10:00 pm BST.
