UFC 242 is just a few days away, after months of anticipation can ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomeov defend his UFC Lightweight Championship against Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier?

The Dogs Odds

What a week in the world of Mixed Martial Arts!! Weili Zhang defeated Jessica Andrade to become the new champion and just one week later we’re about to witness the undefeated Russian Khabib defend his title in Abu Dhabi versus Dustin Poirier.

Congratulations to those who had faith in ‘Dogs and Their Odds’ because if you did, you would’ve happily cashed Weili Zhang whilst the rest of the world crashed their Jessica Andrade tickets. I’m still trying to find another handicapper who gave out Zhang as a pick but it looks like your boy DaveBets was a lone soldier on this one.

More importantly, we have a stacked UFC 242 with a few underdog prices I see potential in.

Paul Felder vs Edson Barboza

UFC 242 takes place on Saturday 7th September live from The Du Arena, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Betting Prediction/Tip: Paul Felder @ 2.45 with Coral

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a spark in the ‘The Irish Dragon’ but Paul Felder takes a break from the commentary box and makes his return to the UFC octagon this weekend in Abu Dhabi.

Since his move to Roufus Sport, Paul Felder has had a late-career resurgence. It has been evident in Felder’s confidence that working with Duke Roufus has made a huge impact on Felder’s striking ability.

Other than a split decision loss to Mike Perry which could’ve gone either way, it’s been plain sailing for Felder since 2016 with 4 wins under his belt. Felder will now be forced into a state of Déjà vu when he faces Edson Barboza for the second time after coming up short in a decision loss back in 2015. It’s hard to judge a fighter based on footage from four years ago but at least we’ve seen these two men scrap it out before.

So, what can we take from the first fight? Felder was scared. Let’s not beat around the bush, he was hesitant and shook of pulling the trigger. When we study Felder’s previous four wins the aggression levels in comparison to past fights is actually quite scary. If Paul Felder clinches you up against the cage and can find room for some elbows, it’s going to be a short night for anyone.

Edson Barboza’s career trajectory has moved in the opposite direction since the first fight. He’s only secured one win from his previous four fights and might be headhunting with confidence in this bout. Edson has already defeated Felder which might cause him to underestimate his opponent. If this is proved right, I can easily visualise Felder knocking Edson out. In reverse, I give Edson considerably less opportunity to get the finish because of Felder’s high fight IQ and elite striking defence.

When push comes to shove, I give Felder the nod in this rematch. Although Edson has fought the tougher competition, Felder is the one who I see the most improvement from. Switching gyms was a great move for ‘The Irish Dragon’ and I’ll side with a knock-out or decision win in favour of Paul Felder.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Paul Felder throws elbows like uppercuts! 😱<br /><br />When he caught Alessandro Ricci clean on the nose... Well, we’ll soon see after UFC 242 when short notice replacement Lerone Murphy faces the toughest fight of his life when he steps inside the caged fighting pit against Zubaira Tukhugov.

Coming in as the biggest underdog on the card, Lerone Murphy has the odds and his back against the wall. With only 5 professional fights and no experience on the big stage, you might think I’m slightly crazy by fading the experienced Russian who’s fighting on the companionable territory.

To be frank, I don’t rate Tukhugov as much as his predecessors. Given his wrestling background it's peculiar that we see him strike so often. He was riding a 3-fight win streak in the UFC against low-level opposition until he faced Renato Moicano and lost. It’s been a three-year lay-off for Tukhugov, which doesn’t mean much for a 28-year old but that doesn’t mean it makes sense. I think Tukhugov will totally over-look Murphy and that could cost him dearly.

Hailing from my home country of England, 28-year-old Lerone Murphy is a complete unknown. Unless you search out some of his old fights on YouTube, then you will struggle to find any footage on him at all. This comes as no shock, the young Englishmen has only fought in five professional fights but believe you me, I’ve seen more than enough potential in the Brit to give him a shot coming in as the biggest underdog on the card.

The last time I remember watching bad quality footage on an unknown fighter and thinking damn…” This guy got serious hands”, was back in 2013 after watching Conor McGregor highlights from Cage Warriors. I do think Murphy can be taken down but he has some decent wrestling of his own and will not lay on his back. Yes, Murphy hasn’t fought any world beaters but in all of his fights, it’s easy to see he deserves a higher level of competition. I see something special in Murphy, Tukhugov is coming off a loss plus a long lay-off. The momentum is with the underdog, I have to take a shot with my home town boy here.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/1SMnpLiekwI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen></iframe>"}[/]

Some statistics below you may find interesting

Murphy is undefeated
Tukhugov has been inactive for 3 years
Murphy makes his UFC debut

UFC 242 takes place on Saturday 7th September live from the Du Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

If you would like to check up on any underdogs or odds not mentioned in this article then click HERE.
