Will UFC on ESPN 4 in San Antonio end the betting drought?

Jennifer Maia vs Roxanne Modafferi

00:00 - Sunday 21st, Jul 2019

“Run it back”, as they say when two fighter’s meets in the octogen for a rematch and that’s exactly what we’re dealing with here in this women’s Flyweight matchup. Jennifer Maia steps in on short notice to replace Liz Carmouche versus an opponent she’s all too familiar with. Back in the 2016 Maia successfully defended her Invicta FC title against Roxanne in a 5 round split decision, now that we are dealing with a 3 round fight will we see much difference?

Personally, I don’t see much difference in the skill sets each girl has to offer since their first fight, this bout is your typical striker vs grappler matchup and if the past has shown us anything… it’s that Jennifer Maia isn’t the most gifted wrestler in MMA but her strength can give her the defensive advantage over somebody on Roxanne’s level of grappling.

Maia is a former champion and has already won this outing before, losing rounds 2 and 3 in their first fight isn’t worrying me as much as it should because Maia was fighting a five-round fight. In the fight this Saturday, Maia will have more energy to use in those early rounds as she won’t be attempting to save any gas for championship rounds.

Roxanne Modafferi has is one of the most unorthodox styles whilst simultaneously having a one-dimensional fighting style, unpredictable to read but has one clear path to victory which is by grappling and then laying and preying on her opponents. If Roxanne can hold pressure on Maia and cause her to circle against the cage then she might be able to win the fight, but as we saw the first time around… Maia was able to pressure Roxanne and cause her to fight off her back foot. Maia couldn’t defend every takedown Roxanne threw at her for five rounds but she did find success in scrambles and countering the ground offence, finding herself in top position multiple times throughout the contest.

Jennifer Maia is also one-dimensional when we break down her path to victory, she’s going to find the most success in the striking department and has done once before against Roxanne. Three years later and both girls are now on the big stage, Roxanne may pose a threat on the ground but I don’t think she can out grapple the stronger girl of the two for 15 minutes. We will see Roxanne grapple for sure but I expect clean, crisp combinations from Jennifer Maia when she breaks the clinch. If Roxanne is able to secure a takedown, we’ll see Maia scramble and give Roxanne trouble whilst she’s trying to maintain ground control.

With that said, the first leg of this week’s ‘Punching Parlay’ will be Jennifer Maia.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

HEAVY shots land from Jennifer Maia at #UFCNashville. pic.twitter.com/JTR6qRO95Y
— UFC Canada (@UFC_CA) 23 de março de 2019
\n"}[/]

Raquel Pennington vs Irene Aldana

02:30 - Sunday 21st, Jul 2019

It’s easy to see Raquel Pennington is flying under the radar in this female Bantamweight contest as she sits as the [2.38] [+138] underdog at the bookmakers (Bet365), which is surprising to see considering her only losses have come against champions or title contenders. Yes, I understand that Pennington hasn’t been the most active of fighters but her experience level is miles above her opponent.

I do think oddsmakers should have opened this line a little closer, just like our previous breakdown this fight is a striker versus grappler matchup. Pennington will need to close the distance and make this fight an ugly one, her experience in the grind is one of Pennington’s most admirable fighter traits. Dog fights that end in close decisions are exactly what Pennington will bring to the table, her inactivity and the potential decline could be a concern but that’s why we won’t be taking a side in this fight.

Both ladies have gone the distance in 4 of their previous 5 fights and with a slight lean towards Pennington, I’ll be taking a look at the fight going the distance. Aldana does have a considerable amount of KO victories on her record but we haven’t seen her defeat anybody in this fashion since 2016.

We should note Pennington does have a knockout loss on her record but that was against Amanda Nunes, everybody gets KO’d by Nunes so I won’t be giving Pennington a hard time on that one. Pennington frequently wins by decision and majority of the time her losses also come by the decision and since her UFC debut, the same goes for Irene Aldana.

With a price that will round off this week’s ‘Punching Parlay’ to even money, we’ll take a low-risk shot with the fight going the distance to wrap up this week’s accumulative wager.

Punching Parlay Wrap Up

· Jennifer Maia at [1.72] [8/11] [-137]

· Pennington/Aldana Fight Goes the Distance at [1.34] [17/50] [-294]

Parlay/Accumulator Odds: [2.30] [13/10] [+130] with Bet365

Stake: £100

Returns: £230

Profit: £130

Current Parlay Bank: -8.25 Units/-8.25u

The Weekly Punching Parlay Season 2 Record: 1-7

Season One

Record: 10-0

End of Season 1 Profit: (£1154, 10.1 Units of Profit)

Starting Stake: £100 (1 Unit)

UFC on ESPN 4 takes place on Saturday 20th July live from the AT&T Centre in San Antonio Available on ESPN, UFC Fight Pass & BT Sports.

The Weekly Punching Parlay is documented and trackable through our fighting section on the Odds Market website.
