Atletico take on struggling Espanyol on Sunday...

Atletico Madrid vs Espanyol

Sunday, November 10, at Wanda Metropolitano

Diego Simeone’s battle-hardened Atletico Madrid troops will bid to get their title challenge back on track when they host Espanyol on Sunday. They have drawn their last two games and they are down to fourth, but they are just one point behind leaders Barcelona in a very congested table. Barca and Real Madrid have both been extremely inconsistent this season and the title could go to Atletico if they stop drawing so many games. They should be able to take all three points against an Espanyol side that find themselves marooned in 19th place in the standings.

Team News

Atletico Madrid have a few injury concerns right now. First choice centre-backs Jose Gimenez and Stefan Savic are both out, but Mario Hermoso is an excellent defender and Felipe has acquitted himself well too. Key midfielders Koke, Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey are all fit, but wunderkind forward Joao Felix is out. Simeone has turned to Angel Correa and Thomas Lemar in his absence, leaving Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa to fight for the remaining place up top.

Espanyol did well to finish seventh last season, but then they sold their best two players in the summer. Hermoso went to Atletico Madrid, and he will show the travelling fans just what they are missing on Sunday, while star striker Borja Iglesias moved to Real Betis. They did not properly reinvest the money and the results have been disastrous. They are second from bottom in the table after losing their last two matches, and their prospects going forward look bleak. Fernando Calero, Jonathan Calleri and Pablo Piatti are injured for Espanyol.

Betting Analysis

Espanyol have a reasonably good record against Atletico Madrid in recent meetings, but they appear to have regressed significantly this season. Both teams have midweek European commitments, but Atletico should be better rested for this match as they play a day earlier and they have a bigger squad. They have only lost once in 11 games this season, but they are drawing too frequently and it is time for them to start finishing teams off. Espanyol are actually much better on the road than they are at home, but Wanda Metropolitano is a difficult place to visit and Atletico should win this one.

Tip: Atletico Madrid -1 Asian handicap at 1.88 (22/25) with Bet365
