Augsburg are in great form...

Augsburg vs Fortuna Dusseldorf

Tuesday, December 17, at WWK Arena

Augsburg will bid to maintain an impressive run of form when they host struggling Fortuna Dusseldorf at WWK Arena this week. Martin Schmidt’s men have won four of their last five games and drawn the other, and that has seen them climb up to 11th in the table. Dusseldorf are down in 16th after taking just two points from their last five matches. They have had a very tough run of fixtures – they lost 4-0 to Bayern Munich, 5-0 to Borussia Dortmund and 3-0 to RB Leipzig in their last five games, along with draws against Hoffenheim and Schalke – but those results could have dented their confidence. Augsburg thrashed Hoffenheim 4-2 at the weekend and they will have the wind in their sails ahead of this showdown.

Team News

Left-back Philipp Max was a revelation when playing in a more advanced role for Augsburg in their 4-2 win against Hoffenheim. He played as a left winger in the game and ended up scoring twice to lead his team to victory. Iago played at left-back and he also got on the score sheet, so it will be interesting to see if Schmidt keeps them both in those roles on Tuesday. Striker Alfred Finnbogason is injured for the hosts, but their main man up front has been Florian Niederlechner, who has seven goals and six assists already. Fredrik Jensen should start alongside Niederlechner after opening his account for the season at the weekend.

Dusseldorf manager Freidhelm Funkel has experimented with a number of different formations in recent weeks, but none have proved successful. They set up in an ultra-conservative 5-4-1 against Leipzig at the weekend and suffered a 5-0 drubbing. They went with a 3-1-4-2 when they drew 1-1 away at Hoffenheim on November 30, and that might be a better approach for this game, but it is hard to tell what Funkel will do. Rouwen Hennings has been their best player so far this season, with 10 goals in 14 games, but he missed the Leipzig game with illness. They will be desperate to bring him back into the fold for this game, particularly with key midfielder Kevin Stoger out injured and David Kownacki looking unimpressive up front.

Betting Analysis

Dusseldorf have lost five of their eight away games so far this season and conceded 19 goals in the process. Their poor form is skewed by the calibre of opposition they have faced, but it could still have left them short on confidence. Their last win came on November 11, when they hosted fellow relegation candidates Koln. Augsburg are in excellent form right now, with 13 points from a possible 15 in their last five games. That momentum could be enough to carry them to victory on Tuesday. Their home games see 3.43 goals on average, while Dusseldorf’s away games see an average of 3.63 goals, so it should be a good game.

Tips: Augsburg to win at 1.91 (10/11) with Bet365; Augsburg-draw double chance and over 2.5 goals at 2.20 (6/5) with Bet365 Bet Builder
