The EFL Championship continues to provide hard to predict results, but one consistent team this season has been West Bromwich. Read our match-day 25 preview for this week’s English Football predictions and tips.

West Bromwich Albion vs Middlesbrough

Sunday, December 29th at The Hawthorns

EFL Championship Betting Tip: West Bromwich wins & over 2.5 goals @ 2.15 [+115] with Betway

Finding 3-points

Despite struggling to find 3-points on multiple occasions in their most recent four fixtures, WBA remains top of the league by 3 points. That being said, they’ve still managed to take points away from these clashes. Three draws and one win is the worst run of form WBA have had this term, which is hardly something to be embarrassed about for manager Slaven Bilic and his squad. Still sitting pretty in the first place, WBA still has just one loss on their record which is a true testament to their abilities. Especially when we consider how challenging the Championship is renowned for being.

With only one loss on their record, it’s no surprise that WBA is still undefeated at home. The Hawthorns has been a place of dread for travelling teams this season and I can’t visualise struggling Middlesbrough being the deciding factor in this clash.

Second time lucky

We’ve now reached the point in the season where each team has already played one another in the first half of the season's fixtures. In October, Middlesbrough fell short to WBA at home 0-1. Since then, Gareth Southgate has turned Middlesbrough’s fortunes around. They’ve recorded back to back wins for the first time this season in recent weeks, but facing WBA on their undefeated territory is going to be a huge ask for Southgate’s men.

Form, Mentality, Numbers & Trends

Middlesbrough have lost all four games against teams in the top four

Middlesbrough have lost 6 from 11 away games this season

Middlesbrough have no recorded wins away from home this term

WBA are undefeated at home and have lost just 1 game all season

WBA have a 100% record of both teams scoring at the Hawthorns

It’s always a tough time of the year; results become unpredictable, teams who’ve had success sometimes decline in performance whilst lesser teams can often make a comeback. One of the teams attempting a comeback is Middlesbrough, but taking on the number 1 team in the league isn’t the ideal fixture when heading into the New Year.

WBA can’t afford to give up 3 points, whilst Middlesbrough can’t afford to continue losing every game that isn’t played on home turf. The first game ended in a 1-0 score line but with Middlesbrough opening up their attack in recent times and WBA conceding in the majority of their fixtures, I expect we’ll see more than one goal the second time around.

The worst outcome for WBA would be to lose form in January, that lesson was learnt by Leeds United last season. I expect a determined WBA side in their final home clash of the year and their perfect 100% home record to continue.

Preston vs Reading

Sunday, December 29th at Deepdale Stadium

EFL Championship Betting Tip: Preston win @ 1.92 [-105] with Betway

Fine home form

Whilst we're on the subject of teams with strong home form, Preston is the only team in the league with a finer home form than league leaders WBA. An incredible 29 points have been accumulated from home games by the Lancashire side.

The recent form may have taken a slight hit, but Preston has faced two of the strongest sides in the league away from home. Their clash against Reading this weekend will see Preston return to their undefeated fortress against a side in Reading who aren’t very impressive on the road.

Readings revival

The revival of Reading, thanks to manager Mark Bowen has continued of late. A win against QPR and ever descending Derby County registered another 6 points for them. The Madejski Stadium has been kind to Reading this season, making them another Championship side that are difficult to overcome when they’re playing on home turf. Away-form hasn’t been too bad either, since the appointment of Mark Bowen, Reading have managed to take away 2 points with two draws.

Recent results can produce illusions

Preston has the best home record in the 19/20 season, so far.

Preston have scored +2 goals in 12 of their previous 14 home games

Reading have won 3 from their previous 30 away day fixtures

81% of Preston’s goals have come at the Deepdale stadium

We’re being gifted with some amazing odds based on recent results. Due to the nature of Preston’s away results and Reading’s home results, this could be the closest to even money we’ll see Preston at in a long time. Coming off two back to back wins at home, Reading is being given more respect against Preston at home than they deserve.

Remove their clashes with the top two teams, Preston have registered 2 or more goals in every game. Reading offering a defensive mindset on the road, they haven’t conceded that many but haven’t scored many either. I think Preston return to winning ways this weekend (2-0) against an overrated Reading side who don’t produce many results on the road.

Extra Football bets, tips & predictions

EFL Championship predictions 29.12.19

Fulham wins vs Stoke @ 2.05 [+105] with Unibet

Huddersfield vs Blackburn - draw @ 3.10 [+210] with Betway

Millwall vs Brentford - draw @ 3.40 [+240] with William Hill

Swansea wins vs Barnsley @ 1.91 [-110] with Bet365

EPL predictions - 29.12.19

Liverpool HT/FT vs Wolverhampton @ 1.91 [-110] with Coral

Man City win/Arsenal vs Chelsea BTTS accumulator @ 1.80 [-125] with Bet365
