Everton should take the sting out of the Hornets...

Everton vs Watford

Saturday, August 13, at Goodison Park

Watford made a dismal start to the new campaign as they lost 3-0 to Brighton in front of a stunned home crowd at Vicarage Road. The Hornets lost their final three games of the 2018/19 Premier League season and then took a 6-0 hiding in the FA Cup final, and they appear to have carried that form into the new campaign. They typically start the season with a strong run of results, so their capitulation at home to a relegation-tipped Brighton side with alarm fans. Now they face a tricky trip to Goodison Park and they will need to seriously up their game if they are to get a result.

Everton were involved in the dullest game of the weekend, as they drew 0-0 away at Crystal Palace. That is not a bad result, but Marco Silva will expect his expensively assembled side to seize all three points in this match. The common consensus is that Everton will fight with Leicester and Wolves for seventh place this season, and they will need to win games like this if they are to clinch it.

Team News

Holding midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off for two bookable offences in the Crystal Palace game, so he will miss this one. Idrissa Gueye moved to PSG this summer, so Everton could hand a first Premier League start to new man Jean-Philippe Gbamin alongside Andre Gomes and Gylfi Sigurdsson. Bernard and Richarlison played either side of Dominic Calvert-Lewin up top last weekend, but newcomers Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi will be pushing to start.

Watford boss Javi Gracia may be tempted to drop a few stars that underperformed during the 3-0 defeat to Brighton. He said he hopes it will serve as a wake up call for his team, but the likes of Isaac Success, Roberto Perreyra, Tom Cleverley and Darryl Janmaat may hope to start this one. Gerard Deulofeu was quiet last weekend and he may find himself axed for this game.

Betting Analysis

Everton have a poor record against Watford, having taken just one point from their last three games against the Hornets. However, they will hope to capitalise on Watford’s sluggish start to the season and secure a big win in front of the Goodison Park faithful. Gracia’s men are big and strong, but Everton look more technically proficient, as the likes of Gomes and Sigurdsson are brilliant on the ball. Calvert-Lewin is not a prolific striker, so Silva will expect Richarlison to get into the box and terrorise Craig Cathcart and Craig Dawson like Neal Maupay did last weekend. If Richarlison delivers a big performance, Everton should win this one.

Tips: Everton to win at 1.70 (7/10) or Everton and under 4.5 goals at 2/10 (11/10) with Coral
