AZ thumped Astana 6-0 two weeks ago...

FC Astana vs AZ Alkmaar

Thursday, November 7, at Astana Arena

It has been a European campaign to forget for Kazakh side FC Astana. They lost 1-0 to Man Utd at Old Trafford in their opener and then suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Partizan Belgrade. Last time out they headed to the Netherlands to take on Eredivisie outfit AZ Alkmaar and they ended up losing 6-0. That left them rock bottom of their group. AZ are on fire right now. They followed up that 6-0 victory by beating PSV Eindhoven 4-0 on the road, and they picked up a 3-0 win against FC Twente at the weekend to move up to second in the table. You would therefore expect them to leave the Kazakh capital with all three points on Thursday.

Team News

Striker Firmin Mubele is injured for FC Astana. Rangelo Janga and Sergei Khizhnichenko have both taken turns leading the lines in his stead, but to little effect. Astana have relied on holding midfielder Yuri Logvinenko to bail them out with winning goals against middling domestic opposition in recent games. Winger Marin Tomasov is dangerous, but the defence is far from watertight. Astana were desperately poor in their last game against AZ and their fans might fear the worst for this match.

AZ are blessed with a really exciting crop of talented youngsters. Eighteen-year-old striker Myron Boadu has scored in each of his last three games and he looks lethal in front of goal. Young wingers Calvin Stengs and Oussama Idrissi have bags of potential and 21-year-old captain Teun Koopmeiners leads the team with aplomb. He scored two penalties in that 6-0 win over Astana, while Boadu, Stengs, Idrissi and 19-year-old right-back Yukinari Sugawara were also on target. Dani de Wit, a 21-year-old playmaker signed from Ajax in the summer, is also in superb form.

Betting Analysis

AZ absolutely hammered Astana when these teams met two weeks ago. They had two-thirds of the possession, 36 shots on goal, 13 on target, and won 6-0. That is about as emphatic as it gets, so odds of 1.53 (8/15) on another AZ win this week look really generous. They are unbeaten in the Europa League so far. They had a man sent off after just 27 minutes of their opener, but they still picked up a 2-2 draw away at Partizan Belgrade. They then held Man Utd to a 0-0 draw and destroyed Astana. They are an inexperienced bunch, but they are bursting with energy and vitality, and they should win this game.

Tip: AZ -1 Asian handicap at 1.85 (17/20) with Unibet
