However, they looked totally unaffected as they ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Getafe in their season opener at the weekend. The personnel may change, but Diego Simeone has his side well drilled, supremely organised, disciplined and difficult to break down every season. They also look to have a real superstar on their hands in Joao Felix, the €120 million signing who dazzled with his pace and panache.

Atletico have taken four points off Leganes in each of the last three seasons. They have won all three games in Madrid, while drawing in each of their trips to Butarque. They will now bid to end that trend of failing to secure victory away at Leganes and they should be confident in their ability to do so. Leganes slumped to a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of newly promoted Osasuna in their first game of the season, and that does not bode well for the campaign. If Atletico harbour genuine hopes of beating Barcelona and Real Madrid to the title this season, this is the sort of game they really must win.

Team News

Atletico earned around €300 million through player sales in the summer, and they reinvested around €230 million of it in new arrivals. Felix is most prominent new signing and he looks like he could prove to be a real bargain. His performance against Espanyol evoked memories of a young Cristiano Ronaldo, and his pace and flair will be crucial in breaking Leganes down. Simeone opted to play Felix and Thomas Lemar either side of Alvaro Morata in the opener, with Saul Niguez, Koke and Thomas Partey in midfield. Former Spurs man Kieran Trippier has slotted straight in at right-back, while Stefan Savic partnered Jose Gimenez at the heart of the defence.

New left-back Renan Lodi was sent off for two bookable offences, so he will need to be replaced. A number of new signings are also vying for inclusion. Hector Herrera, Marcos Llorente and Mario Hermoso in particular will be keen to fight their way into the starting 11, and it will be interesting to see if Simeone gives that trio a chance on Sunday.

Leganes’ most notable signing was Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite, while Kenneth Omeruo joined from Chelsea and there were no departures of note. Star players include Youssef En-Nesyri and Oscar Rodriguez. En-Nesyri is expected to partner Braithwaite up front for this game, and they will have their work cut out against Atletico’s dogged defence. Óscar Rodríguez Arnaiz was shown a red card in Leganes’ opener, and José Arnaiz could come into the side for this game.

Betting Tip: Atletico Madrid to win at 1.86 (20/23) with Betfair
