The deadly duo could cause Man City problems on Sunday...

Liverpool have welcomed star forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino back into the first team in time for Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Man City. The duo had missed the Reds’ entire pre-season campaign as they recovered from the exploits while on international duty this summer. Firmino was part of the Brazil team that won Copa America, while Salah’s Egypt went to the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations. Liverpool struggled in their absence, losing three of their four pre-season friendlies and causing fans to suffer jitters ahead of Sunday’s curtain raiser for the 2019/20 campaign.

The Community Shield pits the Premier League and FA Cup champions from the previous season against one another on the opening day of the new campaign. Man City won both trophies last season, so they will face Liverpool, who finished second in the Premier League by a single point following an epic title battle. Pep Guardiola’s men have been in much better form over the summer and they are the favourites to secure victory on Sunday.

However, the return of Salah and Firmino has given Liverpool a timely boost. The Brazilian striker banged in the opening goal as the Reds beat Lyon last night to end their pre-season campaign on a high. Salah also started and looked lively, and Jurgen Klopp must be tempted to start both men on Sunday. The third member of his star attacking triumvirate, Sadio Mané, has not yet returned to action after his Senegal side went to the final at the Africa Cup of Nations. Bookmakers responded by cutting the odds on a Liverpool win slightly, but they remain 4.0 (3/1) underdogs with Betfred to beat Man City on Sunday. Guardiola’s side are 1.91 (10/11) favourites with Bet365, while the draw is priced at 3.75 (11/4).

Read full match preview and betting tips for Manchester City vs Liverpool here
