Bookmakers have released a number of markets ahead of the 2019 MLS season and Zlatan Ibrahimovic features prominently.

All eyes will be on legendary Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic when the new MLS season kicks off on March 2. The former PSG, Inter Milan and Man Utd star banged in 22 goals in 27 games after moving to LA Galaxy last year and fans are expected a sensational campaign from him this time around. He has won trophies with every club he has played for and he will be desperate to maintain that record with LA Galaxy. However, he will have to be at his very best if he is to fire them to glory in 2019 as defending champions Atlanta United will take some stopping.

MLS Cup winner betting

Last season Atlanta United beat Portland 2-0 in the MLS Cup final to complete a remarkable journey. The club was only founded in 2014 and joined the MLS as an extension franchise in 2017, but the project captured the imagination of many people in Atlanta and they emerged as the best-supported club in the league. They pulled off a real coup by convincing former Barcelona manager Tata Martino to steer the project and he guided them to glory in just their second season in the MLS. They were easily the best team in the division, and Josef Martinez and Miguel Almiron wrought havoc all season long.

Martino has now left the club and Almiron has now moved to Newcastle Utd, but Martinez is still going strong and Ronald De Boer has arrived as the big name manager. Atlanta United are priced at 6/1 (7.0) with Bet365 to win the MLS Cup, but LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls are the 5/1 (6.0) joint favourites. LA Galaxy can call upon the services of Ibrahimovic, while Bradley Wright-Phillips is a real livewire up front for New York Red Bulls and new boy Matthias Jorgensen looks dangerous.

What about DC United?

Another former Man Utd star is also plying his trade Stateside nowadays and Wayne Rooney had a remarkable impact upon DC United last season. When he joined they were languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table, but his goals, assists and inspirational leadership dragged them up the ladder and into the playoffs. England’s record goalscorer will once again lead the charge for DC United in 2019 and they look like an interesting bet at 25/1 with Bet365 to win their first MLS Cup in 15 years.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic goalscoring markets

BetOnline is offering 20/23 (1.87) on Ibrahimovic scoring either over or under 25.5 goals in 2019. He hit 22 goals last year despite missing the first three games of the season, and sitting out several matches due to injury, so he should be perfectly capable of reaching that tally. He scored 113 goals in 117 league games for PSG, and the standard of football is higher in France, while he has always been prolific during spells at Malmo, Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan and Man Utd. He is now 37, but he is in great condition and he has the nous to run rings around MLS defenders.

Last season Martinez finished as top scorer with 31 goals, eight of which came from the penalty spot. The Venezuelan striker is expected to have another fine season, and he is the heavy favourite to outscore Ibrahimovic once more. However, the 19/10 (2.90) that BetOnline is offering on the Swede scoring more than Martinez looks interesting. You can also back him at 4/5 to score more than the Venezuelan with a +2.5 goal handicap. Martinez set a new goalscoring record for the league last season, and he is priced at 2/1 (3.0) to break it in 2019, while Ibrahimovic is 4/1 (5.0) to break that record.

Tips:
Atlanta United to win the MLS Cup at 6/1 (7.0) with Bet365
Zlatan Imbrahimovic to score more than 22.5 goals at 20/23 (1.87) with BetOnline
