The hosts are enjoying a long unbeaten run...

Real Madrid vs Athletic Bilbao

Sunday, December 22, at Santiago Bernebeu

Real Madrid will bid to extend their unbeaten steak to 12 games when they host Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday. Los Blancos battled to a 0-0 draw in El Clasico on Wednesday night and that result ensured they have not tasted defeat in any competition since mid-October. They are level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table and they look perfectly capable of mounting a sustained title challenge this season. Athletic Bilbao’s four-game winning streak ended with defeat to Real Betis on December 8, and they could then only draw 0-0 at home with Eibar in their following game on Saturday.

Team News

Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane are in fine form at the heart of the Real Madrid defence. Shutting out Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann on Wednesday night was a considerable achievement, and that bodes well for the visit of Bilbao. Manager Zinedine Zidane opted for a classic midfield diamond in that game, with Casemiro at the base and Isco at the point, and Toni Kroos and Federico Valverde in between. Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale started up top, with Luka Modric on the bench. Modric may be reinstated for this game, and Zidane might opt to drop Bale and Isco to the bench, with either Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior offering pace and trickery down the flanks.

Captain Iker Muniain is out injured for the visitors. He has chipped in with four goals from midfield this season, so his presence is missed. Forward Raul Garcia is Bilbao’s top scorer, with five goals, while the talented Inaki Williams has four. Right-back Oscar de Marcos is also out injured, but otherwise Garitzka Garitano has a full squad to choose from.

Betting Analysis

Real Madrid are unbeaten at home this season and they have only conceded six goals in eight matches at the Bernebeu. Athletic Bilbao have only scored six in their eight away games, picking up just one win in the process. That suggests Real Madrid’s defence will not be unduly troubled in this game. Los Blancos beat Bilbao 3-0 when they hosted them last season, and another result like that would give their title challenge a great boost.

Tip: Real Madrid to win and under 4.5 goals at 1.78 (31/40) with Betway
