Los Blancos are neck-and-neck with archrivals Barcelona at the top of the table after vanquishing Eibar, Real Sociedad and Alaves in recent weeks. They look capable of mounting a sustained title challenge this season, and they really should sweep Espanyol aside this weekend. Pablo Machin’s men have taken just one point from their last five games and that dismal run of form has seen them slip down to 19th in the table.

Team News

Eden Hazard picked up a knock against PSG in the Champions League and he sat out the trip to Alaves at the weekend. Zinedine Zidane restored Gareth Bale and Isco to the starting line-up, and his team battled to a 2-1 victory. Hazard should be fit to return for this game, and Isco could be the man to make way, although Rodrygo is also pushing for a start ahead of Bale, who has upset fans with his attitude to the club this season. Alphonse Areola has taken Thibaut Courtois’ place in goal. Raphael Varane was injured in a recent training session, but Real Madrid are otherwise at full strength, with Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in midfield and Sergio Ramos anchoring the defence.

Espanyol have not recovered from selling Mario Hermoso and Borja Iglesias in the summer. They hosted an unimpressive Osasuna team at the weekend and played against 10 men for almost half of the game, but still slumped to a 4-2 defeat. The talented Marc Roca plays in front of a back three, but Espayol have been ruthlessly exposed down the flanks in recent games. That does not bode well for a game against the likes of Bale, Hazard, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior.

Betting Analysis

Espanyol are genuine relegation candidates this season, despite finishing in the Europa League places last term. That is what happens if you sell your best two players and fail to replace them. Real Madrid are flying high, and they beat Espanyol home and away last season, so this should be a pretty routine home win. The visitors will probably raise their game, but Rea should ultimately overwhelm them in wide areas and secure victory.

Tips: Real Madrid to win and under 4.5 goals at 1.67 (4/6) with Coral; Bale to score at any time at 2.00 (evens) with 888 Sport
