SPAL have a dreadful away record...

Roma vs SPAL

Sunday, December 15, at Stadio Olimpico

Roma have been impressive in recent weeks and they should be able to grind out a victory against SPAL at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. The visitors have the worst away record in Serie A, with six defeats and a draw from seven road trips so far. In that time they have only managed to score once. Roma just held league leaders Inter to a 0-0 draw at the San Siro, and they have a strong home record this season. They have enough quality in attack to unlock a slightly stubborn SPAL defence and they should be able to take all three points.

Team News

Justin Kluivert missed the trip to Milan with an injury, leaving Diego Perrotti to fill in on the wing. Manager Paulo Fonseca played midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo as a false nine in that game in order to stifle Inter in the middle of the park, and he was rewarded with a point. Yet he is likely to reinstate Edin Dzeko up front for this match against less vaunted opposition in the form of SPAL. He also has to decide whether to stick with Arsenal loanee Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the right, or play Zaniolo there, or reintroduce Cengiz Under. Lorenzo Pellegrini’s place in the team looks safe, as his reputation continues to grow.

SPAL have a number of injury concerns right now. Mohamed Fares, Federico Di Francesco, Arkadiusz Reca, Marco D’Alessandro, Jacopo Sala and Gabriel Strefezza are all out, which leaves them really short of options in wide areas. Top scorer Andrea Petagna has four goals this season, but he has not found the back of the net in his last two matches. SPAL have really struggled for goals this season, and they could struggle for creativity from the flanks due to their long injury list.

Betting Analysis

It is hard to look past a home win in this game. SPAL have lost six of seven away games so far this season, and they are rock bottom of the table. Roma are in good form and they should be emboldened by that draw against high-flying Inter. SPAL have only conceded 11 goals in their seven away matches, so they are never thrashed, but teams typically find a way to edge a win against them. Roma’s home games see an average 3.43 goals, whereas SPAL’s away games feature an average of just 1.71 goals, so combining a Roma win with under on total goals looks appealing.

Tips: Roma and under 4.5 goals at 1.67 (4/6) with Coral; Roma and under 3.5 goals at 2.15 (23/20)
