Chelsea could edge this game against struggling Saints...

Southampton vs Chelsea

Sunday, October 6, at St Mary’s

Chelsea are starting to find their feet under new boss Frank Lampard and a 2-0 victory over Brighton at the weekend carried them up to seventh in the table. It was their first clean sheet since Lampard took that reins and that should please him immeasurably. They have not failed to score in a game since losing to Man Utd on the opening day of the season, and if they can tighten up at the back then they could enjoy a strong season. Southampton are down to 14th in the standings after suffering back-to-back defeats against Bournemouth and Spurs, and they could be low on confidence.

Team News

Ralph Hassenhuttl normally plays four at the back, but he went for a bold change of formation against Tottenham last time out. Full-backs Kevin Danso and Cedric were dropped, and Maya Yoshida came into the team to sit alongside centre-backs Jan Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard in a back three. James Ward-Prowse operated as a right wing-back, with Ryan Betrand on the left. It will be interesting to see if the manager persists with this set-up or reverts to the usual formation. Danny Ings came in for Che Adams against Spurs and he scored, so he could well keep his place alongside Nathan Redmond up front. Moussa Djenepo is facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

Lampard appears to have lost patience with new signing Christian Pulisic, who has been ineffective thus far. He was benched against Brighton at the weekend, with veteran duo Willian and Pedro flanking young striker Tammy Abraham, and Mason Mount pulling the strings. Callum Hudson-Odoi is now fit again, and that will give the Blues a huge boost. N’Golo Kante could be fit in time to return to the team for this game after he missed their last game with a hamstring strain.

Betting Analysis

Chelsea have been inconsistent this season, and betting on them could seem a little risky. However, they have won two out of three away games thus far, while Southampton have lost two of their three home games and drawn the other. They lost 3-1 to Bournemouth in their last match at St Mary’s, and they lost to Spurs last time out despite facing 10 men for most of the game after Serge Aurier was sent off. This is a game that Chelsea really should win.

Tip: Chelsea to win at 1.90 (9/10) with Unibet
