This is a game Valencia simply must win...

Valencia could not find a more obliging opponent as they bid to get their season back on track with a morale-boosting win. They inexplicably sacked successful coach Marcelino last week and then lost 5-2 away at Barcelona to slump down to 13th in the table. They have to contend with a midweek trip to London to take on Chelsea in the Champions League, but they should be fully recovered in time for Leganes’ visit on Sunday.

Team News

Valencia’s billionaire owner, Peter Lim, bankrolled an interesting spending spree in the summer, but goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is the only newcomer to break into the starting 11 so far. Maxi Gomez, a €15 million arrival from Celta Vigo, did come off the bench to score a consolation goal against Barcelona at the weekend, but Valencia are basically persisting with the team that finished fourth last season. Albert Celades has been brought in to replace Marcelino, and he will be eager to pick up a first win of the season on Sunday.

Leganes play with a classic 4-4-2 formation and it has proved to be remarkably ineffective so far this season. They are reliant on Martin Braithwaite, a journeyman striker deemed not good enough for Middlesbrough, for goals, and has only provided one in five games so far this season. Strike partner Youssef En-Nesyri has fared even worse, as his goal drought extends back to last season.

Betting Analysis

Valencia are priced at 13/20 (1.65) to win this game and that looks like a very generous set of odds. They are struggling and they will be a little tired from their midweek exploits, but there will be an inquest if they fail to beat this dreadful Leganes team. They have a lot of quality going forwards, and their leaky defence should not be unduly troubled by Braithwaite and En-Nesyri.

Tip: Valencia to win and under 4.5 goals at 1.80 (4/5) with Coral
