It followed a dreadful start to the season for the Hornets, who lost their opening three games before drawing away at Newcastle last time out. It leaves them rock bottom of the table, and the board clearly felt the need for an urgent change. Flores did reasonably well when steering Watford to a comfortable mid-table finish a few years ago, and he will be desperate to make a strong start this time around. Yet he has been thrown straight into the deep end, as Arsenal have been attacking with pace, dynamism and purpose in recent weeks.

Team News

Arsenal could be without both midfielders that started in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham last time out. Captain Granit Xhaka limped off injured while playing for Switzerland this week, while Lucas Torreira also had to be taken off while on Uruguay duty. He will be missed at Vicarage Road, but Arsenal fans will probably be glad to see Xhaka sidelined after his recklessness cost them dearly in the North London derby. Dani Ceballos looks a far brighter talent, and he could start alongside Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock in midfield. Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin are still out for the Gunners, although Rob Holding might be back.

The big change for Watford is in the dugout, but they have no fresh injury concerns to worry about. Gracia favoured a 3-4-3 formation, with Craig Cathcart, Christian Kabasele and Craig Dawson at the back, but it will be interesting to see if Flores returns the team to his preferred 4-2-3-1. Troy Deeney is the bête noir of Arsenal fans after accusing the team of lacking “cojones” when the Gunners lost here a few years ago, and he will relish the opportunity to rile them up even further.

Betting Analysis

This is a difficult game for Flores to be thrown into. Arsenal beat Newcastle at St James’s Park in their opener and then got the better of Burnley at The Emirates. They were no match for Liverpool at Anfield, but they battled back well to secure a 2-2 draw with Spurs last time out. If Ceballos is pulling the strings in midfield, the pace and invention of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette could really hurt Watford’s defence. The arrival of a new manager often galvanises a team, but Arsenal look stronger than the Hornets and they could well leave Vicarage Road with three points on Sunday.

Tip: Arsenal to win at 2.00 (evens) with Bet365
