Manchester City could not have chosen a more obliging opening day opponent...

West Ham vs Manchester City

Saturday, August 10, at City of London Stadium

The Premier League champions begin the new season with a trip to London to take on West Ham in the early kick-off on Saturday. They have a great record against the Hammers in recent years, having won all six meetings between the teams since Pep Guardiola joined the club. West Ham are not the sort of team that will sit back and soak up pressure, so they will be sure to have a go at Man City, but that leaves them exposed at the back, and world-class forwards like Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling are liable to rip them apart.

Team News

West Ham lost Marko Arnautovic in the summer, but they have broken their club transfer record to replace him with Eintracht Frankfurt forward Sebastien Haller. They also signed exciting Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals from Villarreal, and he should slot in nicely alongside Declan Rice. Manager Manuel Pellegrini loves to see his teams playing free-flowing, attacking football, and the Hammers should be great to watch this season. Felipe Anderson is the key danger man, and he can unlock any defence in the country. But West Ham look as frail as ever at the back, and that should prove to be their undoing against Man City on Saturday.

Man City have brought in Rodri to bolster their midfield options this summer, while club captain Vincent Kompany has retired. Otherwise it is the same Man City team that picked up an astonishing 198 points in the last two seasons and annihilated all and sundry. Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sané have been playing either side of Raheem Sterling during pre-season and in the Community Shield against Liverpool on Sunday. However, Sané picked up a knock in that game, so we could see Gabriel Jesus lead the line, with Sterling shunted out wide to accommodate him. Aymeric Laporte has been struggling with a knock, so John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi could anchor the defence once more.

Betting Analysis

The bookmakers have made Man City the overwhelming favourites, priced at just 1.25 (1/4) with Ladbrokes, so you need to dig deeper to find value. As mentioned above, Man City have won all six games against West Ham since Guardiola took over as manager. Only one of those matches saw over 4.5 goals, and this game could be a relatively tentative affair, as it is the first of the season. Some of the players are still shaking off rust from the summer, and they will be keen to preserve their energy for the long campaign ahead, so a 2-0 or 3-0 win for Man City seems likely.

Top tip: Man City to win and under 4.5 goals at 1.73 (8/11) with Betway
