Early season form points to a goal fest...

West Ham v Norwich

Saturday, August 31, at London Stadium

The Hammers picked up a first win of the season at Vicarage Road on Saturday and that should fill them with confidence ahead of Norwich’s visit. West Ham’s season began with a disastrous 5-0 defeat at the hands of Man City, but they rallied to draw 1-1 away at Brighton and then played really well against Watford at the weekend. Club record signing Sebastian Haller displayed some neat acrobatics as he fired in a brace, and the fans should take to him well. Manuel Pellegrini’s men have the weapons to hurt Norwich in attack, but they cannot stop leaking goals and that will worry their supporters.

Norwich are a very similar team: exciting going forwards and poor at the back. They lost 4-1 away at Anfield in their opening game of the season and then beat Newcastle 3-1. They looked as though they would seize a precious point against Chelsea at the weekend, but a late Tammy Abraham strike handed the Blues a 3-2 victory. Norwich have scored an impressive six goals in their first three games back in the top flight, but they have conceded seven and defensive brittleness could cost them dearly this season.

Team News

West Ham could welcome Javier Hernandez back into the fold for this game after the Mexican striker missed their 3-1 victory over Watford with a minor knee injury. Jack Wilshere was also absent at the weekend, but Pellegrini said he was simply rested. Centre-back Winston Reid is a long-term absentee, but the Chilean coach has no fresh injury concerns. Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini provide creativity, while Declan Rice and Mark Noble anchor the midfield well, but the defence remains a huge concern.

Teemu Pukki has been the star of the show for Norwich so far this season. The Finnish forward has banged in five goals in three games – including a hat-trick against Newcastle – becoming a Fantasy Football legend in the process. Youngster Todd Cantwell has also looked lively, and Norwich attack with pace, power and invention, but they too have struggled defensively. They barely spent a penny on new players this summer and a Championship defence will surely get found out many times over the course of the season.

Betting Analysis

West Ham look well priced at 1.98 (49/50) to win this game. They have home advantage and they will be full of confidence after beating Watford on the road last time out. They harbour hopes of challenging for a top eight place this season, and you really have to beat newly promoted teams at home if you are to achieve such a feat. But Norwich will be fearless as they head to London for this match. They held their own against a very strong Chelsea team and swept aside Newcastle, so they should fancy their chances of hurting this weak West Ham defence.

Tip: Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 1.73 (8/11) at Boyle Sports
