The 2019 Women’s World Cup has progressed through the first 2 rounds of group play leaving each team one match left to play before we reach the knockout round of 16.

Women's World Cup Tournament Recap

With 7 teams having taken maximum points through the first 2 rounds of group stage at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, there is still a wide open race towards placement for the knockout round of 16 ahead. Let’s throw a rundown of what has transpired thus far so you know where we are at in the tournament entering the 3rd and final round of group stage.

France has secured advancement out of group A with 6 points, and their goal differential of +5 combined with a 3rd round match against Nigeria, gives the hosts a clear path to the round of 16. Norway and Nigeria have found a win to take 3 points into their final match of group play, as South Korea isn’t eliminated officially yet without a point in group A.

Germany has their place in the round of 16 stamped with 6 points in group B after equal 1 - wins over China and Espana through 2 fixtures played. China and Spain will meet in round 3 to break their 3-point tie in second-place, as South Africa has yet to find a point in group B.

Italy has surprised many a pundit with their 6 points atop group C, and le azzurre face Brazil to close out play in group C on Tuesday. Brazil and Australia are tied in 2nd with 3 points entering the 3rd round of play, although Australia is expected to cruise past Jamaica who are at -8 with points in group C. Brazil currently holds the +2 tie-breaking advantage in GD over Australia who are level on goal differential through 2 matches.

England and Japan are both through to the round of 16 no matter the final results from round 3 of group D play. The Leopards has taken all 6 points to lead the group entering round 3, while Japan has a draw and a win to sit with 4 points knowing they, at least, have a 3rd place token to the knockout round. Scotland and Argentina will meet on Wednesday to decide which of the two possibly advances to the round of 16. Currently, Argentina’s 1 point as them in 3rd place ahead of Scotland who have nothing to show from either of their first 2 group D efforts.

The Netherland and Canada are dead-locked at 6 points atop the group E table, and their 3rd round meeting at Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims will decide which of the two teams wins the group and which claims the 2 position in the group. Neither Cameroon nor New Zealand have yet to secure a point from their first two outings of group play, but they also meet on the final day of group play with potential for a 3rd place showing.

Group F has been about the American dismantlement of Thailand and the 13 - 0 opening round result to get group F play under way. Sweden has also taken 2 wins and 6 points in group E play with a +6 GD, although the USWNT and Sweden meet on Thursday as group stage comes to a conclusion on June 20. Chile and Thailand will play the final match of this stage of the tournament, with a potential for a 3rd place spot should Chile find a convincing win over Thailand as both the US and Sweden has done.

So, you are caught up now, and ready for a 3rd round of group stage at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.

The week starts on Monday 17th June with 4 matches being played, although group B will feature on the pitch at 15:00 before the group A affairs at 18:00.

Group A Table (Pts) - France (6) - Norway (3) - Nigeria (3) - South Korea (0)

South Korea vs Norway

Monday 17th June at Stade Auguste-Delaune, Reims - Referee: Marie-Soleil Beaudoin (Canada)

This is the only play I am suggesting from the 2 group A outings on Monday, simply because the lines for the France V Nigeria match just do not seem useful enough to suggest a play.

The line setters did leave some room on the Norway handicap, however, and as I see it Pinnacle lists the Norway -1.5 goal handicap at 2.30. Out of all the book makers listing odds for this play, Pinnacle has the nicest offer with the most value out of Europe. Norway will find a way to keep South Korea off the sheet and we can expect the Grasshoppers to jump their way to the round of 16 with a convincing 3rd round win.

Best Tip: Norway -1.5 Asian Handicap @ 2.30 with Pinnacle

Group B Table (Pts) - Germany (6) - Spain (3) - China (3) - South Africa (0)

China vs Spain

Monday 17th June at Stade Océane, Le Havre - Referee: Edina Alves Batista (Brazil)

This has obviously ended up being the biggest match of group B play, being that the winner of this affair takes their show directly to the round of 16. Whichever team fails to take points from the match will have to keep their eye on how hard Germany decided to fight against South Africa to close out group play.

At the same token, a draw between them could make 4 points enough to qualify as a 3rd place team, although neither will likely settle for a point and hope someone else fails to garner points in the final round of group play.

I personally think the public will get lost in the ‘Europe vs. Asia’ significance rather than the teams actually on the pitch China is no push over, and Spain hasn’t exactly screamed their way to 3 points with that win over South Africa to open group B play.

China and Spain will start off the festivities on Monday, and here is what you need to do to start your week with a cashed ticket in obnoxious fashion. Sitting down? Is the Rainmaker about to call for China to beat Spain, in Europe, on the final day of group B play? Almost, but I will be suggesting the China Draw No Bet action with a stupid price of 3.65 (+265 US). I am not convinced that Spain is all that and a bag of chips at this year’s event, and China will run, run, run for 90 minutes and make the most of their few chances given to find the net. This could sure ly be a 1 - 1 game as well, and I do see the +0.5 AH on China listed at about even money. While that is a nice bet to get your mouth wet, lick your chops with this puppy of a play!

Best Tip: China Draw No Bet @ 3.65 with Pinnacle

South Africa vs Germany

Monday 17th June at Stade de la Mosson, Montpellier - Referee: Sandra Braz (Portugal)

What Spain made to look difficult, Germany will not make it look like a struggle when they take on South Africa to close out group play.

Germany isn’t content with 6 points, and they are going to go out and finish this job to plow into the round of 16 with 3 wins and 9 points.

I believe the scoring will start early, as Germany will not come out with such a defensive-minded approach against a team they can start to spread out against. We will see pressing from the German back line because they will not need to stay strict to the 4-3-3 against a weaker opponent.

While we all know that scoring on Germany is always difficult because of their attention to defense, this type of match will give them the ability to stretch their legs and open it up early.

Best Tips: Germany 1st Half -1.5 AH @ 2.55 with Pinnacle

Total Goals Over 1.5 1st Half @ 2.02 with Pinnacle

Group C Table (Pts) - Italy (6) - Brazil (3) - Australia (3) - Jamaica (0)

Italy vs Brazil

Tuesday 18th June at Stade du Hainaut, Valenciennes - Referee: Lucila Venegas (Mexico)

Be sure to tune in to the Youtube show on Monday, because Nat, Wahle_Capper and I am set to talk about these 3rd round matches in further detail.

I have just a few things to say about the Brazilian manager Vadao, because the man became brain-dead at halftime of the Australia match in their 2nd round affair that led to a 3 - 2 loss.

First of all, Farmiga picking up the yellow card in the 14’ already meant she was sitting out of the match with Italy due to card accumulation, that as a result of her yellow card in the opening match against Jamaica. So, coach Vadao decided just to pull her at the half and not have her pick a possible second yellow card to leave Brazil down a player.

Not only did Vadao pull Farmiga at the half, but he also took Marta out of the match after 45’ after she was just getting back to the pitch. Marta missed the first match with Jamaica, but Vadao had the luxury of starting Marta and Cristiane in the 4-4-2 against Australia. That is one dynamic duo if there ever was one in women’s football, and they both had their influence to get Brazil up 2 - 1 in the first half against Australia.

Vado watched his ladies go down 3 - 2 and then proceeded to pull Cristiane as his last move of the game, and I do believe that every fan in Brazil turned off the broadcast right about then.

What? Hold on, WHAT? VADAO? Please do not listen to our Youtube show this week sir, because I have more for you to come… SIR!! LOL

Anyway, I do expect Marta and Cristane back on the pitch again, and I know that coach Milena Bertolini wants to finish group C play with a bang. Bertolini has her ladies playing in peak form at the right time, as the 6-time winner of the Panchina d'Oro of Serie A Femminile.

That means the woman can coach and keep her team motivated to go deep in this tournament, and it has to come with a nice finish against Brazil.

First of all, this total cannot be set high enough to keep me off of it, and there sits the Over 2.5 at 1.89 at Pinnacle. My goodness, please hold me back from doubling up this play, because the Italians will be tested and so will that fragile back line for Brazil again. I mean, Australia pretty much shoved their way over Brazil as soon as Marta and Farmiga were removed from the match, and we know Farmiga won’t even be dressed at all today from suspension.

That spells trouble, and a 2 - 1 game waiting to happen IMHO!

Best Tip: Italy vs. Brazil Over 2.5 @ 1.88 with Pinnacle

Group D Table (Pts) - England (6) - Japan (4) - Argentina (1) - Scotland (0)

Japan vs. England

Wednesday 19th June at Allianz Riviera, Nice - Ref TBA

Similarly to what I attempted in the last round with England in their match against Argentina, I am suggesting that we play England in the first half and the 1x2 line which is lovely.

I am seeing the England 1x2 3-Way 1st Half line listed at 2.75 with Bet365 as this goes in to print, and that is too lovely for me to let go unattended.

Even though England failed to come out strong against Argentina, I expect the Leopards to jump out to a halftime lead, which in turn will help us cash a nice ticket with some value behind it.

Best Tip: Japan vs. England - England 1x2 3-Way 1st Half @ 2.75 with Bet365

Group E Table (Pts) - Netherlands (6) - Canada (6) - Cameroon (0) - New Zealand (0)

Netherlands vs Canada

Thursday June 20th at Stade Auguste-Delaune, Reims - Ref TBA

Well it all comes down to this, and this one is personal between Whale and myself from the first show we did.
