Underdogs were the name of the game in Round 1 of the East as well!

Is it a sign of the times that this year's round two will not feature some staples of the playoffs for some time? Only the Bruins have been this far in the East in recent memory. I wouldn't be so quick to jump on them, however. The 'upsets' in the opening round were not lucky. Arguments could be made for both Capitals and Leafs teams being here, but based on what we saw from the Lightning and Penguins the far better teams prevailed in those series. Let's take a look!

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Round 2 Schedule Set! https://t.co/NO3xmls1V7
— x-Columbus Blue Jackets (@BlueJacketsNHL) April 25, 2019
\n\n"}[/]

Boston Bruins v Columbus Blue Jackets

It's funny most of the people that I know who took the Jackets over Tampa were Leafs and Bruins fans who wanted Columbus to do the dirty work for their teams! And Boston backers got their wish! This is another series I came into thinking I would be on the underdog. However, when pouring over the numbers I couldn't find a solid reason to back the Jackets other than them being rested. And that is nothing to brush off, however, it's only round two and I don't expect a Bruins team that rolls four forward lines and five defencemen to be fatigued just yet. Based on the numbers, Jackets should actually be upwards of 2.65 -2.70 here. In terms of intangibles they won't be able to knock around the Bruins as they did to the Bolts, Boston's top D-man shouldn't be on injured reserve, and I expect their top line to get more done in 5v5. Additionally, the Jackets had some true outliers in their shooting percentage with six players all holding above 25%; Jones 66%, Foligno 50%, Duchene 30%, Texier 28%, Panarin 25%, and Atkinson 25%. Contrast this with a regular season that featured 0 players over 25% and only four above 20. I won't call this an anomaly as we've seen it before, but it is a significant statistical...improbability.

There is a lot to like about a smooth-skating talented bunch like the Columbus Blue Jackets. Even Bobrovsky didn't look like 'playoff Bob' after the opening period of the series. There was some talk of Leafs players targeting a weak glove-hand on Rask, that might be something to look into! However, as much as I'd like to take a Jackets team off their first ever series victory the number isn't good enough for me. That said, I also don't like the Bruins on the spread given how quick the Round 1 to Round 2 turnaround is. So I'll keep it simple:

Boston Bruins (ml) @ 1.65 [Betway]

Score Most Goals:

Duchene (ml) v Bergeron @ 2.35 [Unibet]

While I do expect Duchene's shooting % to regress, this is certain value if the Jackets are gonna make this series a contest!

Unfortunately, at the time of writing this, the series markets for the Islanders v Hurricanes are not out yet. Feel free to get in touch with me on Twitter however if you're keen to bet this one!
