What are the hot tips and best bets for the start of the Twenty20 series?

Afghanistan vs West Indies FirstT20

Thursday 14 November, Lucknow

After a superb three-zip win against Afghanistan in the ODI series – a contest that many expected the tourists to slip up in – the Windies now turn their attention to a T20 affair. It’s a contest that the same sort of folks will reckon is their strongest suit.

In fact, West Indies are ranked as a worse team in T20 than they are in ODI – tenth place versus ninth according to ICC. In another example of how the men from the Caribbean are misunderstood, their Test team, so much maligned, are rated at No 8.

And yet they go off very short favourites here for game one at no better than 1.57 (4/7 Bet365). Afghanistan are 2.5 (6/4 William Hill). Some will reckon the latter is a wager, particularly with the Afghans a significantly better T20 team. Rashid Khan is a far greater threat with his spin wizardy in the shorter format.

In a significant blow to the Windies, hitter Nic Pooran has been banned for four matches for ball tampering. That means they will rely on Brandon King and Lendl Simmons for top-order runs. Granted, the pair were sensational in the recent Caribbean Premier League, but it is slightly odd that they will split the duo from their natural opening berths. King is expected to bat at No 3 instead of being given maximum opportunity to unleash the damage he managed from the top for Guyana Amazon Warriors.

As you can see from the charts below, there’s not a huge amount of value on the tops bets for the WI. But we do like Kieron Pollard at 7.0 (6/1 William Hill) for most runs and Hayden Walsh at 5.5 (9/2 Bet365) for most wickets. Rashid has a 57 per cent hit rate in the last 14 matches on top bowler so Sportingbet’s 2.75 (7/4) is chunky.

West Indies – top bat wins/matches last two years

Lewis 3/8
Gayle 0/6
Fletcher 4/9
Samuels 1/8
Walton 1/7
Russell 2/4
Allen 1/8
Pooran 2 1t/9
Hope 1/11
R Powell 1/13
Brathwaite 1 1t/18
Holder t/3
Campbell t/5
Pollard 1/5

West Indies – top bowler wins/matches last two years

Williams 2 3t/9
Brathwaite 1 3t/18
Taylor 1 t/3
Cottrell 3 2t/8
Badree 2t/10
Pierre t/3
Nurse 2t/9
Paul 2 3t/14
Emrit 2t/4
Powell t/14
Smith t/2
Allen 1 2t/9
Holder t/3
Bishoo t/2

Best Tips for Match

Rashid Khan top Afghan bowler 2.75 Sportingbet
