Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ previews the side markets at this week's AFR ASIA BANK Mauritius Open for oddsmarket.com

AFR Asia Bank Mauritius Open

December 5-8, Heritage Golf Club at Bel Ombre, Mauritius

A real eclectic mix of golf professionals from the three tours that co-sanction this week's AFR ASIA BANK Mauritius Open. The European Tour joining forces with the Sunshine Tour and Asian tour brings a more difficult puzzle than normal.

Thomas Aiken was a fourth-place finisher at the Heritage Golf Club back in 2015 and arrives in Mauritius on the back of a great week at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. 2019 has been a rather dis-jointed year for the South African who has only managed fifteen starts but last week shows real progress after a promising tournament previous in Portugal. His last tournament victory on either his home, Sunshine Tour or the European Tour was back in 2014 and often represents good value in the side markets.

Carlos Pigem was a player we tipped last week at the Alfred Dunhill Championship after regaining his European Tour playing privileges at the Qualifying School three weeks ago. Noticeable in the Alfred Dunhill Championship was a disastrous third round of 85 that plummeted him down the leaderboard. Both occasions the Mauritius Open has been held at the Heritage Golf Club Pigem has performed with credit and he looks worthy of another chance to place in the Top 20 or Top 40 market this week.

Frenchman, Clement Sordet was a player I followed in the early months of 2019 on the European Tour with some success. I tipped him each way for the Oman Open when he was runner up at 67.00. Through the European summer months, he has been poor but last week at Leopard Creek Country Club he looked back in sync with a top 30 finish in what was a tough week. Last season at the Mauritius Open he finished 13th and there is every reason and motivation for him to play well this week now confidence has returned to his game.

A player not unknown to readers of my column is South African, Justin Walters he recorded back to back top 20 finishes at the Heritage Golf Club in 2015 and 2017. A couple of weeks ago at the Portugal Masters he landed a 23.00 dead heat winner of the Top Rest of the World market. Now back into the sport after missing a few weeks in the summer after the passing of his father this journeyman professional always requires respect at venues he has performed well at in the past.

A Sunshine Tour regular with back to back top 10 finishes at Heritage Golf Club in Mauritius is Oliver Bekker. Last year at the other course used for this tournament he also managed a seventh-place finish illustrating his liking for Mauritius. It has not been the greatest of seasons for Bekker but encouragingly his 2019 best of sixth was at the Sibaya Challenge a couple of weeks ago.

Another couple of Sunshine Tour stalwarts to respect in Mauritius are Merrick Bremner and Keith Horne. Bremner, does periodically manage to win and actually won at the end of September. He is an inconsistent type who played well at the Heritage Golf Club in 2015 finishing eighth. Horne is a more consistent player but we need to go back to 2015 for his last tournament win, he did, however, play well last week at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Recommended Bets

Clement Sordet - each-way – Top Continental European @ 56.00 (55/1) Paddy Power

Clement Sordet – Top 20 @ 7.00 (6/1) Paddy Power

Oliver Bekker – Top 20 @ 5.00 (4/1) Ladbrokes

Carlos Pigem – Top 40 @ 4.50 (7/2) Paddy Power
