Cheltenham becomes a swaying sea of green on day three of the March Festival as the punters celebrate St Patrick’s Thursday in style.

The Irish have a long affinity with the Cheltenham Festival and thousands will head over the Irish Sea to attend, turning it into a raucous party. There is also a fantastic array of top-notch races to look forward to, including the Stayers’ Hurdle. This is the feature race on day three of the famous festival and it is also the leading long-distance hurdle event in the National Hunt calendar.

Big races

The action gets underway at 1.30pm with the Grade 1 JLT Novices’ Chase, a 2 mile and 4 furlong contest taking in 17 fences. Next up is a Listed handicap, the Pertemps Final, which was won by Presenting Percy last year. The Grade 1 Ryanair Chase is at 2.50pm. This was introduced in 2005 when the Cheltenham Festival expanded from three days to four, and it is now one of the most important races at the Festival. The Stayers’ Hurdle is at 3.30pm, carrying prize money of £325,000, followed by the Grade 3 Festival Plate. At 4.50pm the Mares Novices Hurdle returns for a third year and the day ends with the Grade 2 Kim Muir Challenge Cup, a 3 mile 1½ furlong chase for amateur jockeys.

Favourites and market movers

Four out of seven favourites won at Cheltenham yesterday, so punters are sure to lump on the big names on day three. Defi Du Seuil is the 10/3 favourite with Ladbrokes to win the JLT Novices’ Chase and he is the most heavily backed horse, although Pravalunga has seen action and gone in to 12/1 with some bookmakers. Sire Du Berlais is the favourite for the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle, while the betting sites have four superstars vying for favouritism in the Ryanair Chase: Monalee, Footpad, Road To Respect and Un De Sceaux. All are household names, and Footpad looks like an attractive each-way option here at 9/2.

Paisley Park is the favourite to crown a rapid rise to prominence in the Stayers’ Hurdle after dazzling with his brilliance in the Cleeve Hurdle. Yet there is a lot of love for Cheltenham legends Faugheen, who is tackling this distance for the first time. He is a huge market mover, but he can still be backed at 9/2. Epatante has been established as the clear favourite for the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, but the other two races of the day look wide open, without a clear favourite, and there is plenty of each-way value on offer. Siruh Du Lac looks an interesting bet in the Festival Plate. If you want a real long-shot, Yanworth is 40/1 to win the Stayers’ Hurdle with Coral, and he looks strong on heavy ground, so he might surprise a few people today.

Bonus offers

Paddy Power is offering 60/1 on Footpad to win the Ryanair Chase ahead of Frodon, Monalee and co. Your stake is capped at £1 and any winnings take the form of free bets. 888 Sport has 33/1 on Faugheen to win the Stayers’ Hurdle, but it will allow you to stake the princely sum of £5 on that. Genting Bet will give you a free bet up to £40 if your first selection loses at Cheltenham, while Coral will double your winnings up to £25 in cash if your horse wins.

Related articles:

Cheltenham Festival 2019: Horse Racing Tips And Essential Betting Guide

Cheltenham Festival Day Two Recap

Cheltenham Leading Trainer Update: Henderson Leads Mullins And Elliott
