We provide an update on the race to be named leading trainer at the Cheltenham Festival after two thrilling days of action.

Nicky Henderson landed two big winners on Wednesday to seize the initiative in the race to finish as leading trainer at the Cheltenham Festival. Beware The Bear delivered for him in the Ultima Handicap Chase on Tuesday, before he suffered the heartbreak of watching Buveur D’Air fall in the Champion Hurdle. Yet he bounced back on Wednesday as Altior cemented his legendary status by winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase for the second year running. Henderson is now the 7/4 favourite with Betfair to be named top trainer at Cheltenham for the first time since 2012.

However, he faces stern competition in this race. Willie Mullins made the perfect start to the festival by winning the first two races, with Klassical Dream and Duc Des Genievres clinching victories. However, he has not added to that tally since then. Two of his runners, Wicklow Brave and Blue Sari, finished second on Wednesday, and he has a strong hand for the rest of the meeting. Henderson also had two second-place finishes on day two, and he will be eyeing more glory before all is said and done.

It was a terrible start to the festival for Gordon Elliott, who was the leading trainer here in 2017 and 2018. He had four favourites beaten in the opening two days, but he finally got off the mark when the magnificent Tiger Roll won the Cross Country Chase once again. He then doubled up in the final race of the day as Envoi Allen won the Champion Bumper. Betfair now has a market leading 2/1 on Mullins being named top trainer, while William Hill has a best price of 5/2 on Elliott.

No other trainer has secured more than one victory so far. Paul Nicholls, Joseph O’Brien, Gavin Cromwell, Dan Skelton, Henry De Bromhead, Ben Pauling and Martin Brassil have each claimed a solo win. That means Ireland currently lead Ireland lead Great Britain 8-6 in the Prestbury Cup, which is awarded to the country that trains the most winners over the week.

Related articles:

Cheltenham Festival 2019: Horse Racing Tips And Essential Betting Guide

Cheltenham Festival Top Jockey Betting: Can Ruby Walsh Regain His Crown?

Cheltenham Festival: Who Will Be Crowned Top Trainer?
