Ex snooker professional Craig Edwards @EdwardsTips_ previews the quarter final match between Neil Robertson and Mark Williams in the Coral Players Championship

Coral Players Championship

Neil Robertson v Mark Williams
Date: March 7th, 13:00
Venue: Preston Guild Hall, Lancashire
Television: ITV4

Preview

Former world champion Neil Robertson and reigning world champion Mark Williams lock horns in Thursday's quarter final.

Neil Robertson has been impressively consistent all season having dropped out the elite Top 16 last year. He rededicated himself to the sport and the “ Thunder from Down Under” won the opening ranking event the Riga Masters and last month's Welsh Open. Robertson’s opening round victory was against his good friend Joe Perry making two centuries in the process.

Mark Williams started the season in great style winning the Yushan World Open but has fallen away completely which is only to be expected when we consider he has been busy enjoying his reign as world champion to the full! The last few weeks there are signs he has knuckled down to some serious practice. In his opening round against Ali Carter he made back to back centuries having only made nineteen all season.

Head to Head – 15-5

Betting Odds

Neil Robertson – 4/5 (1.80) at Boylesports

Mark Williams – 6/5 (2.20) at Bet365

Verdict

In January these two crossed paths at the Masters over eleven frames with Neil Robertson running out a comfortable 6-3 winner. At the time I was surprised to see Neil Robertson open as the second favourite at 6/5 (2.20) given his dominant head to head and their current form, this time around the match is priced more accurately . Given their head to head the thing we learn is the Australian is comfortable playing Mark Williams while many are knocked off track but his nonchalant style it is the Welshman who feels the pressure in this particular match up. That status quo looks the same to me again for Thursday’s match up. If you look at the statistics from Mark Williams match and the two centuries he made you would believe he played brilliant however, on occasions stats can lie and this I believe is one time they do. The Welshman didn’t look at his comfortable best missing plenty of long shots by a distance with his some snatching in his cue action. He will get better for winning matches I am sure, but for now there will be no hiding place should Neil Robertson produce his recent form.

Both are brilliant break builders in their own right however, often when Mark Williams has the frame won he stops concentrating properly bringing his break to a premature end. In their twenty-two previous encounters between the players Neil Robertson has won the highest break scorer market on fifteen occasions. This season Neil Robertson has sixty-one centuries this season in comparison to Mark Williams twenty one. Those three facts are all the evidence we need to support the Australian in the highest break market betting.

Keep stakes small as the bookmakers have priced the match better than in January.

Recommended Bets

Neil Robertson to beat Mark Williams – 4/5(1.80) at Boylesports
Neil Robertson to be the highest break scorer – 8/11(1.73) at Bet365
