Finn to fly high in Scotland

DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP

September 26-29
St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarn Links

Three Links course’s host the Dunhill Links Championship and there is plenty of previous form to use. We also have to consider certain players have better temperaments and the extra patience required this week when partnering an amateur.

One player I am keen on is Australian Lucas Herbert. A couple of weeks ago I tipped him at the Porsche European Open and he performed creditably by finishing in 22nd. My attention has been drawn to his 8th place finish on debut here last year and will support him again this week in the Top Rest of the World market each way.

Chris Wood is emerging from a slump in form that was caused by a struggle with injury. The last three weeks we have encouragement to start believing he has turned a corner. Last week at the BMW PGA Championship was another small step in the right direction for the Englishman and he will be looking forward to a tournament he has four top 15 finishes in the last ten years.

Another Englishman Ross Fisher will be in fine spirits this week having pocketed a £132,000 car from last week's sponsors BMW for an albatross two on the par 5 eighteenth at Wentworth. Three times a runner up in this event although not the most consistent sort and a small each way bet in Top GB and Ireland market is advised.

Sweden’s Joachim Lagergren has an affinity for this tournament with three top 12 finishes in four years. After a slow season he is starting to build a bank of consistent results in recent weeks, backed up last week at Wentworth by a 24th place finish. Two of the top 12 finishes in the Dunhill Links Championship have been top 4 finishes and this links specialist is my idea of a good bet this week.

Scot Stephen Gallacher was the 2004 champion and still retains the ability to win tournaments as he illustrated earlier in the season when he won the Indian Open. For betting markets, we will concentrate on the side markets this week given his consistent results over the last ten years when he has completed seven top 40 finishes.

Another player who specialises in links play is Padraig Harrington who has twice been the Dunhill Links Champion in 2002 and 2006. Three times a major champion and two of them were Open Championships. It has been a while since he won but he is superb reliable in this event with seven top 40 finishes in last ten years. We are going to back him to make it eight!

Paul Dunne another Irishman was high on my list until a poor opening round at last week’s BMW PGA Championship. He is also a links specialist who lead an Open Championship at St Andrews and has three top 25 finishes in four years here.

South African Richard Sterne has the profile of a solid side market pick this week having proved his suitability for the format with a 2nd place finish in 2016 and 6th two years previous. The last two weeks on the European Tour his form appears to be trending in the right direction and has a solid look in the side markets.

Finland’s Tapio Pulkanen looks of interest this week on the strength of his debut last year when he finished an impressive fourth which initiated an impressive run of seven top 20 finishes in seventeen events. Since June results have been poor with numerous missed cuts until last week at the BMW PGA Championship where he looked in better form, finishing 26th. Back in Scotland this week looks perfect timing on the schedule for the long hitting Finn, so I propose the Top 20 and Top Continental European market.

Recommended Bets

Lucas Herbert - Top Rest of the World (each way) at 31.00 (30/1) Bet365

Ross Fisher - Top GB & Ireland (each way) at 41.00 (40/1) Bet365

Joachim Lagergren - Top 30 at 4.00 (3/1) Paddy Power

Padraig Harrington - Top 40 at 2.88 (15/8) Paddy Power

Richard Sterne - Top 20 at 10.50 (17/2) Paddy Power

Tapio Pulkanen - Top 20 at 10.00 (9/1) Unibet

Tapio Pulkanen - Top Continental European (each way) at 101.00 (100/1) Paddy Power
